Thomas Heilman Tops 400 IM at YMCA Nationals as Schroeder Girls Continue to Dominate<\/strong><\/p>\n

Remaining perfect through three days at YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., is\u00a0Thomas Heilman<\/strong>, the high school senior who has established himself as the country’s best 200 butterflyer in the past two years. While Heilman has not challenged any records at his final short course meet prior to college, he has now captured two individual wins and helped Piedmont to three relay titles.<\/p>\n

Heilman came in at 3:48.21 in the boys’ 400 IM final after leading wire-to-wire. He won the event by almost five-and-a-half seconds over Birmingham’s\u00a0Ethan Xu<\/strong> (3:53.66), with Spartanburg’s\u00a0Maddex Ternes<\/strong> third (3:56.60). Later on, Heilman led off his team’s 200 free relay in 19.62 before\u00a0Will Browne<\/strong>,\u00a0Jack Hathaway<\/strong> and\u00a0Will Charlton<\/strong> finished off the win in 1:19.83, easily beating Greater Somerset (1:21.53) and\u00a0Schroeder (1:21.89).<\/p>\n

Lakeland Hills’\u00a0Connor Johnson<\/strong> doubled up in the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 46.88 to add to his earlier 200-yard win. Johnson came from behind to beat Greater Somerset’s\u00a0Kenneth Barnicle<\/strong> (46.99), with McGaw’s\u00a0Rayburn Kohl<\/strong> third (47.93). The boys’ 200 free went to Schroeder’s\u00a0Ethan Schutten<\/strong> in 1:34.90, with Browne (1:36.15) and Ridley Area’s\u00a0Jonathan Hoole<\/strong> (1:37.70) among the top-three.<\/p>\n
