She participated in an hourlong moderated panel discussion, describing her journey through swimming and her gender transition in college after a youth spent growing up in Texas. Her comments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2025\/03\/penn-trans-youth-forum-lia-thomas-speaks-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were reported by<\/a> the <em>Daily Pennsylvanian<\/em>, Penn\u2019s student newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas advocated for an \u201cathlete-driven\u201d avenue toward identification for competition purposes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has to be the athletes deciding for themselves where they feel most affirmed and most comfortable,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving routes that are safe and non-discriminatory, that allow them access to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas competed for Penn\u2019s men\u2019s swimming team before transitioning genders. She competed in women\u2019s competition in 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-2022-ncaa-womens-championships-day-2-finals-500-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winning a national championship<\/a> in the 500 free. Her presence led to changes in athlete classification by a number of governing bodies, including World Aquatics and the NCAA. World Aquatics created a separate open category for transgender swimmers, though it got little traction and no entries at its first World Cup appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/swimming\/story\/_\/id\/40334702\/cas-rejects-lia-thomas-challenge-rules-trans-swimmers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost a legal challenge<\/a> of World Aquatics\u2019 rule banning athletes who have undergone a male puberty from competing in women\u2019s events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt so devastated and grief over losing this access to my sport,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cThere was no doubt in my mind that I was going to fight this, that this is my sport too, and I&#8217;m not just going to give it up to trans folks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas, who has remained an active advocate for the trans community, described her process in 2022, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lia-thomas-timeline-the-road-to-a-controversial-national-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she began posting nationally relevant times<\/a>, of dissecting the NCAA policy on transgender athlete participation to see if competing was possible. It was a measured decision to compete that season, especially amid the growing backlash. Thomas did it in part to give visibility to the trans community and in part because she was following her love of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#8217;t want to swim. I just wanted to step away and be able to transition and be myself,\u201d she said. \u201cBut my love of swimming kept me going. &#8230; When I had transitioned, I felt more comfortable, and I said, \u2018I can do this. I could do both.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her presence remains a hobby horse of politicians in media, with the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/trump-administration-freezing-funding-for-university-of-pennsylvania-due-to-transgender-swimmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last month freezing more than<\/a> $175 million in funding to Penn because the university allowed Thomas to compete.
