{"id":608823,"date":"2025-03-28T19:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-03-29T02:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=608823"},"modified":"2025-03-28T22:43:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T05:43:50","slug":"ncaa-mens-championships-hubert-kos-surges-to-ncaa-record-in-100-backstroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-mens-championships-hubert-kos-surges-to-ncaa-record-in-100-backstroke\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA Men&#8217;s Championships: Hubert Kos Surges to NCAA Record in 100 Backstroke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>NCAA Men&#8217;s Championships: Hubert Kos Surges to NCAA Record in 100 Backstroke<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The NCAA record in the 100 backstroke looked to be under fire after a few prelims swims were a half second away at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men&#8217;s Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Florida&#8217;s <strong>Jonny Marshall<\/strong> was the top seed from the season and kept that top seed heading into finals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2025-ncaa-division-i-mens-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA Division I Men\u2019s Championships Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/swimmeetresults.tech\/NCAA-Division-I-Men-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the final, Marshall turned in 20.70 to hold a narrow lead after the first 50.<\/p>\n<p>But Texas&#8217;s <strong>Hubert Kos<\/strong> threw down a tremendous second half of the race to in in an NCAA record 43.20. Kos is two-for-two after winning the 200 IM.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought that I could get the NCAA record. I was talking with my brother about it, and he said there was no way, and I was like, &#8216;OK, watch me!&#8217; and I shushed him a little bit afterward,&#8221; Kos said. &#8220;I am really happy with that swim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Marshall ended up with the second-fastest time in history with a 43.22.<\/p>\n<p>Both passed the previous NCAA record set by Georgia&#8217;s<strong> Luca Urlando<\/strong>, who set it in 2022 leading off the medley relay for the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia&#8217;s <strong>Ruard Van Renen<\/strong> took third in 43.85.<\/p>\n<p>Cal went 4-5 with <strong>Mewen Tomac<\/strong> (43.94) and <strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> (44.10).<\/p>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Owen McDonald<\/strong> was sixth (44.16), followed by Texas&#8217; <strong>Will Modglin<\/strong> (44.17) and Army&#8217;s <strong>Johnny Crush<\/strong> (45.07).<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee&#8217;s<strong> Harrison Lierz<\/strong> won the consolation final in 44.40, edging Virginia Tech&#8217;s <strong>Youssef Ramadan<\/strong> (44.72), who was on the second half of his double after finaling in the 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n<pre><b> Event 12  Men 100 Yard Backstroke<\/b>\r\n=========================================================================\r\n         NCAA: N 43.35  3\/25\/2022 Luca Urlando, Georgia\r\n         Meet: M 43.35  3\/25\/2022 Luca Urlando, Georgia\r\n     American: A 43.35  3\/25\/2022 Luca Urlando, Georgia\r\n   U.
