{"id":608657,"date":"2025-03-27T18:37:39","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T01:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=608657"},"modified":"2025-03-27T21:26:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T04:26:31","slug":"ncaa-mens-championships-hubert-kos-touches-out-destin-lasco-in-epic-200-im","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-mens-championships-hubert-kos-touches-out-destin-lasco-in-epic-200-im\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA Men&#8217;s Championships: Hubert Kos Touches Out Destin Lasco in Epic 200 IM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 200 IM played its way into a showdown after prelims at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men&#8217;s Swimming and Diving Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Texas junior <strong>Hubert Kos<\/strong> and Cal&#8217;s <strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> took the top two seeds, but it wasn&#8217;t that they were the top two that was somewhat surprising, but how they did it.<\/p>\n<p>Kos dominated his heat with a strong performance start-to-finish. Meanwhile Lasco, the American record-holder went from fourth in his heat to first on the freestyle leg as he passed the trio ahead of him to get to the wall.<\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of contenders about a half second behind.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2025-ncaa-division-i-mens-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA Division I Men\u2019s Championships Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/swimmeetresults.tech\/NCAA-Division-I-Men-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the final, Kos took the lead at the butterfly at 20.52. He continued to lead in the backstroke as Owen McDonald was second and Lasco was looming.<\/p>\n<p>Lasco made a huge move in the freestyle once again but ended up just seven hundredths of a second behind Kos who got to the wall in 1:37.91, which ironically tied him with Lasco as second-fastest performers ever after <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was really good. It was the second best, though we have Leon who is a second-and-a-half faster than that,&#8221; Kos said. &#8220;I tried to focus on myself like with every race, but when you see Destin on the last 25 and you know he is coming, you get a little extra to race him and I love to race. I live for moments like those. Last year he got me &#8211; he got me by a lot &#8211; but I was able to get the win this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Part of that is his growth in the race itself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think back to right before I started training with <strong>Bob (Bowman).<\/strong> It was the World Championships in Budapest. I put my life on the first 100 and hoped for the best. I almost drowned that last 50 freestyle.\u00a0 I have come a long way since then.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That includes Olympic gold in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That calms you down, in a good way. Three years ago, I was really nervous when I swam. After Paris, it feels like there is no reason to be scared anymore because I have done it on the biggest stage,&#8221; Kos said. &#8220;That was my goal since I was a kid and I feel like everything after that is sort of a gift, and that is how I view these NCAAs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McDonald hung on for third at 1:39.52, ahead of Virginia Tech&#8217;s <strong>Carles Coll Marti<\/strong> (1:39.52), Stanford&#8217;s<strong> Ron Polonsky<\/strong> (1:39.84), Florida&#8217;s <strong>Julian Smith<\/strong> (1:39.85) and Michigan&#8217;s <strong>Gal Groumi<\/strong> (1:40.17).<\/p>\n<p>Texas&#8217; <strong>Will Modglin<\/strong> was disqualified for not finishing the backstroke leg fully on his back.<\/p>\n<p>In the consolation heat, Georgia&#8217;s <strong>Luca Urlando<\/strong> took a lead early and built it to a body length at the halfway point.
