RICHMOND, Virg., November 2. SOPHOMORE Brooke Boncher (West Newbury, Mass.) broke the school record in the 200 fly by three seconds with a time of 2:02.80, to lead the University of Richmond women's swimming team past Georgia Southern 172-94, today, at the Robins Center Natatorium. The win improves the Spiders record to 1-1, while GSU falls to 1-1 on the season.<\/p>\n

Freshman Michelle Coombs (Newburg, N.Y.) was a tri-winner as she took first place in the 200 backstroke (2:06.59), the 200 freestyle (1:53.33), and contributed in the 200 medley relay (1:51.22) to open the afternoon's wins.<\/p>\n

The Spiders won all but one event, 200 freestyle relay, and had strong contributions from the whole roster, including six first-place finishes by freshmen. Freshmen winners include: Megan Riley (Towson, Md.) in the 1650 freestyle (17:27.09), Kara Swift (Haddonfield, N.J.) in the 100 backstroke (59.76), Emily Bateman (Somers Point, N.J.) in the 100 freestyle (53.79), and Holly Hinds (Andover, Mass.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.28). <\/p>\n

Other multi-finishers were sophomores Boncher, who won both the 100 and 200 butterflies with her time in the 100 butterfly as a NCAA "B" qualifying time and Laura MacHaffie (Concord, Mass.) who took both the one and three meter diving crowns with 204.90 and 225.38 marks, respectively.<\/p>\n

Other first places finishes were by sophomore Anne Kirchner (Winter Park, Fla.) in the 500 freestyle (5:13.22), junior Erin Lears (Towson, Md.) in the 400 IM (4:40.18), junior Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.42), senior Mo Sabri (Chambersburg, Pa.) in the 50 freestyle and the 200 medley team made up of Coombs, Erin Cutitta (Earlysville, Va.), Casey Dluhos (Savannah, Ga.), and Calla DeRuosi (Richmond, Va.) with a final of 1.51.22.<\/p>\n
