﻿{"id":607870,"date":"2025-03-21T04:19:25","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T11:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=607870"},"modified":"2025-03-21T23:53:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-22T06:53:55","slug":"nsw-state-championships-night-one-kaylee-mckeown-fires-off-an-opening-shot-of-204-57-to-win-the-200m-backstroke-after-just-two-weeks-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nsw-state-championships-night-one-kaylee-mckeown-fires-off-an-opening-shot-of-204-57-to-win-the-200m-backstroke-after-just-two-weeks-training\/","title":{"rendered":"NSW State Championships, Night One: Kaylee McKeown Fires Off An Opening Shot of 2:04.57 To Win The 200m Backstroke After Just Two Weeks Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>NSW State Championships, Night One: Kaylee McKeown Fires Off An Opening Shot of 2:04.57 To Win The 200m Backstroke After Just Two Weeks Training<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia\u2019s four-time Olympic champion <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> has started 2025 with a bang, after pumping out a solid 2:04.57 to win the 200m backstroke on the opening night of the NSW State Championships in Sydney tonight &#8211; and after just two weeks of training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It keeps her eight-year unbeaten record intact at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in what was a most impressive display after nine sessions &#8211; by the 23-year-old Queenslander who holds the world record at 2:03.14.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the 18s<sup>th<\/sup> fastest time ever swum \u00a0and gives the the two-time double Olympic backstroke champion from Tokyo and Paris 13 of the fastest 20 times ever swum in the event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Six belonging to her main rival <strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> from the USA and one to 2012 Olympic champion <strong>Missy Franklin,<\/strong> also from the USA.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve had a long break, and it\u2019s been quite hard to get back in,\u201d said McKeown, who has certainly fired a \u00a0shot across her rivals bow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have only just completed my first two full weeks of training\u2026nine sessions\u2026.and it\u2019s been good to see what I can do off the back of that\u2026I know I\u2019ve got plenty more to give\u2026!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was really good to get back out there for my first long course race after Paris\u2026I was pretty nervous, with a new coach (Mel Marshall) and it\u2019s sometimes hard with new beginnings and new starts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut it\u2019s a good stepping stone towards a new four-year prep (to LA in 2028).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd it (the race) was harder than what I thought it would be; my legs are a little bit sore\u2026but at the end of the day to finish with a pretty solid time. There\u2019 not much more I can ask for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKeown wasted no time, getting back into the swing of things, powering to a full body length lead after the first 25 metres and winning the title by half the length of the pool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The girl from Griffith University was out in 29.36 (just 0.02 outside her world record split from 2023 before touching at the 100m mark in 1:01.14 and the 150m turn in 1:33.15 before punching out a trade-mark McKeown final 50m spit of 31.42 \u2013 just a fraction outside her world record final 50m split of 31.30.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other winners on the opening night included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Melbourne Vicentre\u2019s <strong>Tara Kinder<\/strong> who continued her outstanding form from her home State Victorian Championships (where she won for gold medals in the 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, 400m freestyle and 400IM) tonight completing the Victorian-NSW 400IM double in an eye-catching personal best of 4:42.59 and adding the 100m breaststroke in another personal best time of 1:07.42 to kick-start her three-day meet in fine form &#8211; show-casing what&#8217;s to come at next month&#8217;s Australian Open.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>World champion Paris Olympian <strong>Sam Williamson<\/strong> (Melbourne Vicentre) who dominated in his 50m breaststroke forte in a standout 26.82 from <strong>Lucas Matzerath<\/strong> (Germany) 27.70 and <strong>Nash Wilkes<\/strong>(Griffith University) 27.92. Matzerath later scoring an impressive win in the 200m breaststroke in 2:13.42.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with all eyes on <strong>Williamson<\/strong>\u00a0in the 50m breaststroke final, Trinity Grammar (NSW) teen\u00a0<strong>Christopher \u00a0Montana<\/strong> set a new 15 years National record, not once but twice in the one day. Montana clocking 28.71 in the heats and 28.54 in the final where he finished fifth to again lower <strong>Haig Buckingham<\/strong>\u2019s five-year-old mark of 29.06 set back in the year 2020.He was joined on the record breakers list by\u00a0<strong>Henry Allan<\/strong>\u00a0(Bendigo East, VIC) who smashed his own National Age 16 years record in the 50m backstroke, clocking 25.00 \u2013 faster than two-time Olympian and 2024 World Champion\u00a0<strong>Isaac Cooper<\/strong>\u00a0at the same age.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sydney University\u2019s Paris 4x100m relay silver medallist <strong>Will Yang, <\/strong>was a clear winner in the men\u2019s 100m freestyle 48.93, from fellow New South Welshman <strong>Marcus Da Silva (<\/strong>Cranbrook Aquatics, NSW) 49.48 and three-time Olympic medallist <strong>Matt Temple<\/strong> (Marion, SA) 49.73.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And USC Spartans Paris medley relay silver medallist <strong>Alex Perkins<\/strong> who flew over the 50m butterfly to win in 25.72 from Sweden\u2019s <strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong> (26.16) and Queensland teenager\u00a0Mackenzie Burns (St Andrews, QLD) 26.54 before backing up for silver behind <strong>Brittany Castelluzzo <\/strong>(Tea Tree Gully, SA) 54.68 to Perkins 54.86, with <strong>Jaimie de Lutiis<\/strong>\u00a0(Wests Illawarra Aquatic, NSW) third in 55.10.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p
