I also love how passionate they are and how much they hurt when they lose because they just love sport, they love swimming and they love trying to compete and I just love that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like the leadership and where they want to take things and the talent pool is really exciting and I\u2019m working at what I think is the best facility in the world. Also, it\u2019s the most positive facility in the world. The woman at reception makes me banana bread \u2013 I\u2019m like wow! Love her!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Reaching The Pinnacle Before A Parting Of The Ways<\/h3>\n<p>Marshall first graced an international podium at 13 with four gold medals at the <strong>European Youth Olympics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to compete at two Olympics as well as claiming extensive silverware at world, European and Commonwealth levels, including six medals at Melbourne 2006.<\/p>\n<p>After retiring in 2008, she was appointed head coach at the <strong>City of Derby club<\/strong> where a 14-year-old Peaty accompanied his friend Kyle to a try-out session.<\/p>\n<p>Thus began a partnership that saw the pair blaze a pioneering trail. She also oversaw the men\u2019s medley relay which won Olympic silver and world gold.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition came Marshall\u2019s way as she became the first woman to be named the\u00a0<strong>British Swimming Coaches Association Coach of the Year<\/strong>\u00a0in 2014, the first of three straight awards.<\/p>\n<p>She was named\u00a0<strong>High Performance Coach of the Year<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>UK Sport<\/strong>\u00a0in 2019 and\u00a0<strong>British Swimming\u2019s Coach of the Year<\/strong>\u00a0that same year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Marshall was awarded an MBE for services to swimming and charity in the Queen\u2019s Birthday Honours List.<\/p>\n<p>However, over time cracks emerged in the relationship with <strong>Aquatics GB<\/strong> and it heralded a parting of the ways.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019ll always be thankful for the people that walked in and supported me and those people know who they are,\u201d said Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t the people but the system and me wanted different things: Australia and me are looking for the same things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really thankful that I found a system with the same values and the same vision and the same desires to chase dreams.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Finding Herself Again On Return From Paris<\/h3>\n<p>After returning from Paris in early August, Marshall had four months before her move to Australia, time she used to \u201cfind herself again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It gave her time to focus on her swim school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmswiminspiration.co.uk\/\"><strong>MM Swim Inspiration (MMSI)<\/strong><\/a>, that delivers residential camps for competitive swimmers aged 9-16 that brings an Olympic experience to swimmers on home soil.<\/p>\n<p>She also travelled to South Africa and London with \u201cThe Leadership High,\u201d talking about the \u2018confidence muscle,\u2019 a concept that you can build a stronger sense of self-belief through practice and effort.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall spent time with family and friends and hosted a memorable leaving party in a teepee with 2008 double Olympic champion <strong>Becky Adlington<\/strong> and Olympic and world medallist <strong>Jo Jackson<\/strong> among those enjoying the festivities in Marshall\u2019s back garden in Loughborough.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_608337\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-608337\" data-attachment-id=\"608337\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mel-marshall-on-her-love-for-australia-and-the-values-they-share\/photo-from-liz-byrnes-32\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Photo-from-Liz-Byrnes-32.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1435,896\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Mel Marshall\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Mel Marshall: Photo Courtesy: @photosbynardia &#038; @claytenfowler&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Photo-from-Liz-Byrnes-32-700x500.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Photo-from-Liz-Byrnes-32-1024x639.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-608337\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Photo-from-Liz-Byrnes-32-700x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"198\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-608337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mel Marshall: Photo Courtesy: @photosbynardia &amp; @claytenfowler<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She also spent time with her mum <strong>Lorraine<\/strong> who brought her up in Wrangle, Lincolnshire.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving her behind was the hardest part of Mel\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou get to a certain age and you ask yourself how many days will I have with them?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thinking about the whole move for so long and when I finally made the decision, it just really shines a light on time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shines a light on how many more times can I pop into my mum\u2019s house? How many more times can I see my friends? My friends\u2019 kids will all be much more grown-up when I get back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat in itself has been therapeutic, you kind of reorganise what matters in your life and what doesn\u2019t matter and what you want to do.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lorraine saw how Marshall was wavering about whether to go to Australia as well as not living life to its full potential.<\/p>\n<p>She told Marshall: \u201c\u2018I haven\u2019t had you to keep you: you need to go and live your dream.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat must have been a hard sentence for a mum to say but I will always be thankful for her saying that. We\u2019ve got an Alexa so I can pop into her kitchen all the time which has been hilarious to do. I always think year one discovery, year two, innovate; year three work; year four refine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, in that post-Olympic space it requires some management and it requires some protecting from expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got to follow the succession of one of Australia\u2019s greatest coaches and that in itself is a welcome challenge.
