MADISON, Wis, October 29. UNIVERSITY of Wisconsin senior Matt Marshall and Penn State junior Courtney Stanchock were named the Big Ten Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week, respectively, the conference announced today. <\/p>\n
Marshall Wins Men's Award<\/b>
\nMarshall was a member of two relay teams that set pool records in the Badgers' 172-116 win over Iowa Saturday. He also won a pair of individual events. It is the fourth such honor for Marshall in his career.<\/p>\n
Marshall (Chico, Calif.\/Pleasant Valley) joined Adam Mania, Kevin Zakrzewski and Dale Rogers in breaking the UW Natatorium record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:20.87. The time broke the previous mark of 3:21.00 that was set by a Badger team that also included Marshall in 2001. <\/p>\n
He also teamed with Mania, Rogers and Eric Wiesner in setting a new pool mark in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet posted a time of 1:21.76, easily breaking the prior mark of 1:22.42 set by a Purdue team in 1998.<\/p>\n
Marshall enjoyed success individually as well, capturing titles in the 50 freestyle (20.68) and the 100 butterfly (49.14).<\/p>\n
Stanchock Wins Women's Award<\/b>
\nPenn State junior co-captain Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.) picked up her first career conference honors as she was named the Big Ten Conference's Women's Swimmer of the Week for her efforts in Penn State's double-dual meet Oct. 24-25th at Virginia.<\/p>\n
Stanchock helped Penn State's 400-yard freestyle relay team to a first-place finish against defending National Champion Auburn and Virginia with a time of 3:29.07. She also posted a pair of NCAA "B" qualifying times to help the Nittany Lions defeat Virginia. She finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.80 (NCAA B) and second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.44 (NCAA B). She was also on the 400 and 200 medley relay teams that finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Stanchock is the first Nittany Lion to receive conference honors since current sophomore Lisa Silvestri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Nov. 12, 2002.
