Oakland Doubles Up With Horizon League Title Sweep<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Oakland Grizzlies\u2019 men and women were crowned champions of the Horizon League this past Saturday, their 11th straight. IU-Indianapolis and Cleveland State finished behind Oakland on the men\u2019s side, while Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Cleveland State were second and third on the women\u2019s side, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wednesday<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Oakland got off to a strong start, taking both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s 200 medley relays. A team of <\/span>Grace Albrecht, Bella Gary, Jordyn Shipps, <\/b>and<\/span> Ronja Riihinen <\/b>won in 1:40.83, while <\/span>Harry Nicholson, Christopher Palvadre, Sofus Balladone, <\/b>and <\/span>Charlie Brown<\/b> went a meet record 1:24.16 on the men’s side. <\/span>Sebastian Otero<\/b> won the men\u2019s 3-meter diving(445.75). <\/span><\/p>\n

Youngstown State got on the board in the 800 freestyle relay, with <\/span>Miriam Frass, Olivia Sweetman, Hailey Clark, <\/b>and Oliwia Kaniak <\/b>squeaking by IU Indianapolis to win in 7:21.40. Oakland followed up with another win on the men\u2019s side, a team of <\/span>Joey Countryman, Jack Wike, Karel Subagyo<\/b>, and <\/span>Jonas Cantrell<\/b> coming through in 6:25.55. IU-Indianapolis\u2019s leadoff swimmer, <\/span>Nathan Rariden<\/b>, set a championship record with his split of 1:35.23.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thursday<\/strong><\/h3>\n

IU Indianapolis got on the board with its first win to start Thursday, as <\/span>Emmaleigh Zeitlow<\/b> won the 500 freestyle (4:47.02), breaking her own meet record. <\/span>Jonas Cantrell <\/b>of Oakland took the 500 for the men (4:18.06). Oakland went on a run following Cantrell\u2019s win, as <\/span>Jordyn Shipps <\/b>(1:59.72) <\/span>\u00a0<\/b>and <\/span>Jack Wike <\/b>(1:45.3) won titles in the 200 IM. Cleveland State\u2019s <\/span>Gracie Chelf<\/b> won the 50 free to break the Oakland run (22.78), although the Grizzlies\u2019 <\/span>Charlie Brown <\/b>came back and won for the men (19.69). <\/span><\/p>\n

Oakland\u2019s <\/span>Elleana Chalifaux<\/b> won the women\u2019s 1-meter diving. The night closed with the 200 free relay, as a Wisconsin-Milwaukee team of <\/span>Gabrielle LePine, Carly Plate, Christiana Brooks<\/b>, and <\/span>Janelle Schultz <\/b>took the event (1:31.63). A championship record was smashed on the men\u2019s side, with <\/span>Micah Scheffer, Harry Nicholson, Wike<\/b>, and <\/span>Brown <\/b>finishing in 1:17.73 for the Grizzlies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Friday<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Shipps <\/b>(53.23) and <\/span>Sofus Balladone <\/b>(47.1)<\/span> got the Grizzlies out to another great start, both champions in the 100 fly. Youngstown State scored its first individual win with <\/span>Frass<\/b> in the 400 IM (4:18.91). <\/span>IU Indianapolis dominated the 200 free, as<\/span> Zietlow<\/b> won her second individual event (1:46.95) and <\/span>Rariden <\/b>was just 0.18 off his new record (1:35.41).<\/span><\/p>\n

Milwaukee\u2019s <\/span>LePine <\/b>won the 100 breast in 1:01.01 for the women, while <\/span>Palvadre<\/b> won for the men (52.83). Oakland swept the 100 back, with freshman <\/span>Albrecht<\/b> winning for the women (54.19) and <\/span>Nicholson <\/b>for the men. <\/span>Otero<\/b> prevailed in the 1-meter diving with a score of 414.15, good for a championship record.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wisconsin-Milwaukee picked up another relay victory on the women\u2019s side, this time with a 400 medley relay team of <\/span>Mara Freeman, LePine, Maddi Hayashi, <\/b>and Schultz <\/b>(3:39.13). The Oakland men finished the night by breaking another championship record, this timein the 400 Medley Relay with a team of <\/span>Nicholson, Palvadre, Balladone, <\/b>and <\/span>Brown<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saturday<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Swimming\u2019s longest race kicked off Saturday, as Youngstown State\u2019s <\/span>Frass <\/b>(16:40.8)<\/span> and<\/span> Oakland\u2019s <\/span>Cantrell <\/b>(15:15.71)<\/span> collected their second individual wins. Oakland enjoyed a superb run, winning four straight events. <\/span>Albecht <\/b>and <\/span>Nicholson<\/b> claimed victory in the 200 backstroke (1:58.91; 1:42.01) before <\/span>Ronja Riihinen<\/b> and <\/span>Brown<\/b> ruled over the 100 free (50.19; 43.47). <\/span><\/p>\n

Cleveland State\u2019s <\/span>Giovanna Cappabianca<\/b> squeaked past <\/span>Oliwia Kaniak<\/b> of Youngstown State to win the women\u2019s 200 breast, while <\/span>Palvadre<\/b> won his fourth event by taking the men\u2019s title. <\/span>Shipps <\/b>won her third individual in the 200 fly, before Cleveland State\u2019s <\/span>Paddy Johnston<\/b> broke his own championship record to win for the men(1:44.67). <\/span><\/p>\n

Chalifoux<\/b> swept the women\u2019s diving competitions with a victory in the women\u2019s 3-meter (298.95). The Oakland men and women closed the meet just as strong as they had begun it, winning both 400 free relays. A team of <\/span>Riihinen, Albrecht, Erike Pietras, <\/b>and <\/span>Shipps <\/b>won for the women, while <\/span>Nicholson, Wike, Palvadre, and Brown <\/b>won for the men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nicholson<\/b> won Men\u2019s Swimmer of the Meet and <\/span>Frass<\/b> Women\u2019s Swimmer of the Meet. <\/span>Mitch Alter<\/b> of Oakland was named Men\u2019s Coach of the Year and <\/span>Kyle Clements<\/b> of Milwaukee\u00a0 was named Women\u2019s Coach of the Year. The Freshman of the Year on the men\u2019s side was <\/span>Gunnar Seversen<\/b> of Milwaukee and <\/span>Albrecht<\/b> of Oakland was Freshman of the Year for the women. <\/span>Otero<\/b> and <\/span>Chalifaux<\/b> were predictably the Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s Divers of the Year, with their coaches <\/span>Eric Barnes<\/b> of IU-Indianapolis and <\/span>Will Brenner<\/b> of Oakland winning Diving Coaches of the Year.<\/span><\/p>\n
