CENTER VALLEY, Penn, October 28. A trio of Colgate Raiders were honored by the League office with Patriot League Swimming & Diving weekly awards after CU's victories over Holy Cross Saturday. <\/p>\n
Headlining the list of Colgate winners are freshman Laura Driscoll (Haddonfield, N.J.\/Haddonfield Memorial), junior Lane Ellis (Warwick, N.Y.\/Warwick Valley) and sophomore Emily McAuliff (Springfield, Ill.\/Springfield). <\/p>\n
American senior Dominick Szabo (North Wales, Pa.\/North Penn) rounds out the list of weekly winners after a solid outing versus UMBC last week.<\/p>\n
Szabo won his first Men's Swimmer of the Week award after three first-place finishes in American's 126-102 loss to UMBC last weekend. The senior opened the meet by winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:52.07, which was three and a half seconds quicker than the runner-up. Szabo then touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke with a UMBC pool-record time of 2:03.46, nine seconds quicker than the next closest competitor. It was also the fifth-fastest time in AU history. Szabo also helped the 400 medley relay squad to a victory.<\/p>\n
Driscoll was tabbed the Women's Swimmer of the Week after posting a pair of individual victories in Colgate's win over Holy Cross Saturday. The freshman won the 1,000 freestyle by more than 23 seconds over teammate Kay Smith after posting a time of 10:57.08. Driscoll took home another lop-sided victory with a 14-second win in the 500 freestyle (5:21.94).<\/p>\n
Ellis claimed Men's Diver of the Week accolades for the first time this year and the second time in his career after sweeping the swimming events in a 164-61 League win over Holy Cross Saturday. The junior, who has won four-straight events to open the season, reached the national qualifying standard in the one-meter dive with a score of 312.53. Ellis also took home the three-meter title with a 304.50 rating, which was 96 markers more than the runner-up.<\/p>\n
McAuliff took home Women's Diver of the Week honors for the first time in her career after a record-breaking performance in CU's 106.5-79.5 victory over PL foe Holy Cross. The sophomore opened the meet by breaking the school and pool records in the one-meter dive with a score of 280.50. The previous pool mark of 272.00 was set by Olympian Veronica Ribot of Boston University in 1979. McAuliff was the runner-up in the three-meter event with a 253.13 mark.<\/p>\n
The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its second decade of academic and athletic excellence. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of the undergraduate experience.
