The Olympic silver medalist in the meters version of the event already clocked the country’s fastest time in the event during her two-month college career, touching in 3:59.02 in late January, and she backed that up with a conference win Thursday. A slim lead over Stanford’s Caroline Bricker after butterfly turned into a lead of more than three seconds at the halfway point. The field came back to Grimes on the breaststroke, but her elite freestyle meant no one would catch her.

Grimes finished in 3:59.69, two-thirds of a second shy of her season-best time. Grimes owns a lifetime best of 3:57.02, making her the 6th-fastest performer ever in the event. Bricker placed second in 4:01.40, and her Stanford teammate Lucy Bell was third in 4:01.70. Bricker is one of only three swimmers, along with Grimes and Florida’s Emma Weyant, to break 4:00 this season. Bricker swam a top time of 3:59.88 from the Texas Invitational in November. Leah Hayes, another Virginia freshman who surged through the field on breaststroke, took fourth in 4:02.23.

Event 16 Women 400 Yard IM
=========================================================================
MEET: @ 3:59.33  2/16/2023 Ella E Nelson, UVA-VA
CONF: # 3:55.97  3/22/2024 Alex Walsh, UVA-VA
AMER: $ 3:54.60  3/16/2018 Ella Eastin, Stanford
USOP: % 3:54.60  3/16/2018 Ella Eastin, Stanford
NCAA: ^ 3:54.60  3/16/2018 Ella Eastin, Stanford
Pool: & 3:59.33  2/16/2023 Ella Nelson, UVA-VA
4:03.62  A
4:10.74  IV24 Invited NCAA 2024
4:16.78  B
Name Year School Prelims Finals Points
=========================================================================
=== Championship Final ===

1 Grimes, Kathryn  FR UVA               4:02.57    3:59.69 A       32
r:+0.70  25.59        54.68 (29.09)
1:24.12 (29.44)     1:52.84 (28.72)
2:28.27 (35.43)     3:04.18 (35.91)
3:32.28 (28.10)     3:59.69 (27.41)
2 Bricker, Caroli  SO Stanford          4:05.55    4:01.40 A       28
r:+0.67  25.85        54.88 (29.03)
1:25.64 (30.76)     1:56.03 (30.39)
2:30.37 (34.34)     3:05.44 (35.07)
3:33.96 (28.52)     4:01.40 (27.44)
3 Bell, Lucerne    JR Stanford          4:08.70    4:01.70 A       27
r:+0.67  25.94        55.41 (29.47)
1:27.20 (31.79)     1:58.28 (31.08)
2:31.89 (33.61)     3:05.97 (34.08)
3:34.65 (28.68)     4:01.70 (27.05)
4 Hayes, Leah      FR UVA               4:04.62    4:02.23 A       26
r:+0.78  26.82        56.38 (29.56)
1:26.38 (30.00)     1:56.14 (29.76)
2:30.47 (34.33)     3:05.77 (35.30)
3:34.61 (28.84)     4:02.23 (27.62)
5 Thompson, Emily  FR Stanford          4:09.05    4:06.28 IV24    25
r:+0.65  26.17        56.17 (30.00)
1:27.65 (31.48)     1:59.46 (31.81)
2:34.04 (34.58)     3:09.83 (35.79)
3:38.56 (28.73)     4:06.28 (27.72)
6 Hazle, Kathryn   SO California        4:09.76    4:07.63 IV24    24
r:+0.71  27.00        56.97 (29.97)
1:29.09 (32.12)     2:00.42 (31.33)
2:35.20 (34.78)     3:10.21 (35.01)
3:39.49 (29.28)     4:07.63 (28.14)
7 Farris, Aislin   JR UNC               4:09.27    4:08.60 IV24    23
r:+0.64  26.61        56.56 (29.95)
1:27.38 (30.82)     1:57.47 (30.09)
2:33.56 (36.09)     3:10.14 (36.58)
3:39.94 (29.80)     4:08.60 (28.66)
8 Bathurst, Ella   SR UVA               4:09.93    4:10.89 B       22
r:+0.73  27.37        57.96 (30.59)
1:29.79 (31.83)     2:00.36 (30.57)
2:36.30 (35.94)     3:12.53 (36.23)
3:42.11 (29.58)     4:10.89 (28.78)

Men’s 400 IM

NC State’s Kyle Ponsler pulled ahead of the field on the backstroke leg, but he could not hold up as Louisville’s Tommy Bried took control of the race on breaststroke before holding tough on freestyle.
