JACKSONVILLE, Fla., October 26. AT this past Thursday's District 2-A Florida high school swimming meet in Jacksonville, Bolles junior Yi Ting Siow made her mark on the Bolles school record books. Siow broke the Bolles school record in the 200-yard individual medley finishing in 2:00.16 breaking the previous school record of 2:01.00 set by Casey Sherman in 1994. <\/p>\n
On Saturday, Nov. 1, she will compete in the state high school championships in Sebastian, where the Bolles girls will aim for their 13th consecutive state title. <\/p>\n
"Considering the tradition of this swimming program, school records are hard to come by. Any time a school record is broken, it means something here," said Bolles coach Jeff Poppell. "I would imagine that her time currently ranks as the fastest high school time in the nation in that event." <\/p>\n
Siow will attempt to break Allison Wagner's 200 IM state record of 1:58.91, also set in 1994. Wagner, who swam at Gainesville Eastside, went on to win two Olympic silver medals at the 1996 games. <\/p>\n
"I can't describe what it feels like [to break the record]," said Siow, who will compete in the 2004 Athens Games for Malaysia. "I didn't know I was so close to the school record until coach [Poppell] told me last week. That pushed me to want to break it. "I don't want to think about breaking the state record. I just want to swim hard and help the team at the State Championships." <\/p>\n
Other outstanding performances by the Bolles girls included a 1-2 finish by Stephanie Carr and Kate Skaggs in the 200 Free with times of 1:51.50 and 1:51.91. Anja Carman and Stephanie Carr led a 1-2-3-4 Bolles finish in the 500 Free with very fast times of 4:47.13 and 4:47.78 respectively. Finally, Yi Ting Siow took her second title of the meet in winning the 100 Breast in 1:03.11.<\/p>\n
The Bolles girls swam away with the district team title, with 663 points to 286 for second-place Episcopal. <\/p>\n
The Bolles boys also took home the team district title with 616 points well ahead of second place Episcopal who finished with 349 points. <\/p>\n
Boys captain Chris George led the Bulldogs with a win in the 500 freestyle and a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle, in addition to swimming the first leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team. <\/p>\n
"My training partner [Yi Khy Saw] and I push each other every day, and I just wanted to do the same thing in the race," said George, a senior. Saw finished 6 hundredths of a second behind George.
