Caspar Corbeau Gives Indiana Boost in National Title Bid<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Indiana men\u2019s swim and dive team might lack the consistent track record of top-two finishes at the NCAA Championships. That would be Cal, the winner or runnerup at the meet every year since 2010, and Texas, with 11 such results in the last decade-and-a-half. But head coach Ray Looze<\/strong> has put his team into the top-five on many occasions over the last decade, and it has been clear since the fall that his 2024-25 team might be the best yet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Six swimmers return to the team after scoring individual points at the 2024 NCAAs, led by 200 breaststroke Olympic finalist Josh Matheny<\/strong> and 200 freestyle Olympic semifinalist Rafael Miroslaw<\/strong>. A sprinter who represented the U.S. in Paris (Matt King<\/strong>) joins the team to provide a significant relay boost while Olympic semifinalist backstroker Miroslav Knedla<\/strong> joins the team. Zalan Sarkany<\/strong>, Owen McDonald<\/strong> and Brian Benzing<\/strong> transfer into the program after finishing top-two in an individual event last year. Sarkany was last year\u2019s NCAA titlist in the 1650 free<\/a> while Benzing is the top returning swimmer in the 100 breaststroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Not to mention 121 returning diving points from Carson Tyler<\/strong>, a two-time winner at last year\u2019s national meet, plus Quentin Henninger<\/strong> and Maxwell Weinrich<\/strong> both coming off second-place finishes.<\/p>\n

Yes, we\u2019re aware of the bona fides of Longhorns Hubert Kos<\/strong> and Luke Hobson<\/strong> plus breakout star Rex Maurer<\/strong>. Surely Destin Lasco<\/strong> and Jack Alexy<\/strong> will have something special in store for their final NCAA Championships. Looze knows it, too, and he still has plenty of reason to be confident in his team\u2019s ability to stack up when titles are on the line in two months.<\/p>\n

And with the arrival of Caspar Corbeau<\/strong>, the Olympic bronze medalist in the 200 breaststroke, the Hoosiers are capable of amassing more than 80 points between the 100 and 200-yard events of that stroke. Matheny, Benzing and Jassen Yep<\/strong> combined for 48 last year, and that was with Matheny\u2019s disqualification in the prelims of the 200 for a one-hand touch. Corbeau only made his Indiana debut this month, but he achieved multiple top-two finishes on the national level during his time at Texas, and he has shown considerable improvement in his international results since then.<\/p>\n

Imagine if Indiana could score 200 national points between only breaststroke and diving \u2014 only six teams eclipsed that total for the entire meet last year. That would give the Hoosiers<\/a> a legitimate chance at winning the whole thing.<\/p>\n
