{"id":603753,"date":"2025-01-24T19:00:58","date_gmt":"2025-01-25T02:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=603753"},"modified":"2025-01-24T19:00:58","modified_gmt":"2025-01-25T02:00:58","slug":"virginia-women-lower-american-record-in-400-medley-relay-behind-gretchen-walshs-47-15-fly-split","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-women-lower-american-record-in-400-medley-relay-behind-gretchen-walshs-47-15-fly-split\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Women Lower American Record in 400 Medley Relay Behind Gretchen Walsh&#8217;s 47.15 Fly Split"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Virginia Women Lower American Record in 400 Medley Relay Behind Gretchen Walsh&#8217;s 47.15 Fly Split<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Virginia women came close to their U.S. Open and NCAA records in all three relays contested Friday at the Eddie Reese Texas Showdown, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/eddie-reese-texas-showdown-session-1-virginia-medley-relay-buzzes-within-1-of-ncaa-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coming just a tenth short in the 200 medley relay during the morning session<\/a> before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/eddie-reese-texas-showdown-session-2-gretchen-walsh-blasts-historic-relay-splits-third-fastest-100-fly-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenging the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay marks in the evening<\/a>. However, they did get on the record board with an American mark in the 400 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>The team of\u00a0<strong>Claire Curzan<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Anna Moesch<\/strong> combined for a time of 3:21.48, just behind the NCAA mark of 3:21.01 set by a team consisting of the Walsh sisters plus\u00a0<strong>Jasmine Nocentini<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Maxine Parker<\/strong> last March. But their time did eclipse the American record of 3:22.34 that the Walshes along with\u00a0<strong>Alexis Wenger<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> swam on two separate occasions in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia has set the NCAA record in the event each of the last two years but with one non-American swimmer on the squad each time, <strong>Aimee Canny<\/strong> (South Africa) in 2023 and Nocentini\u00a0 (Italy) last year.<\/p>\n<p>Gretchen Walsh clocked a 47.15 butterfly split, the fastest time in history by more than one-and-a-half seconds ahead of\u00a0<strong>Maggie Mac Neil&#8217;s<\/strong> previous best mark of 48.76 set two years ago at the SEC Championships. The other splits in the record-setting effort included Curzan&#8217;s 50.05 backstroke spit, Alex Walsh going 56.67 on breaststroke and Moesch coming home in 47.61.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, in the previous NCAA-record-setting and American-record-setting performances, Gretchen swam backstroke with Alex on butterfly, but because of Curzan&#8217;s presence to handle the backstroke leg, Gretchen has shifted
