Photo Courtesy Wade Brennan (Swimming Queensland).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And tonight O&#8217;Callaghan started her program with a win in the 100m backstroke in 59.51, ahead of team mate <strong>Hannah Fredericks<\/strong> (1:00.76) and <strong>Layla Day<\/strong> (Bond) 1:00.94, before tackling a grueling 17 years and over 800m freestyle where she finished eighth in 8:58.26 &#8211; a race won by SA&#8217;s Mollie Walker in 8:39.41.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/oceania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oceania Swimming News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And that&#8217;s the extent of O&#8217;Callaghan&#8217;s State&#8217;s program interrupted by a dental appointment on Monday to have her wisdom teeth removed.<\/p>\n<div>\n<pre><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\">\u201cOriginally I wasn\u2019t in the mental space to race again\u2026but this year it\u2019s just about popping into States  for all the kids to keep inspiring the next generation,\u201d said Mollie.<\/span><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCoach <strong>Dean<\/strong> (<strong>Boxall<\/strong>) and I agreed I\u2019d race for two days &#8211; the relay day and the first day. I would have done more races but I\u2019m actually having my wisdom teeth out as it\u2019s the only time I could do it \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think I was more scared at doing the 800m &#8211; I am so unfit. But I\u2019ll try and do my best as well as the 100m backstroke..I have to be a little bit selfish and have some time away from my main events \u2026 especially after the year I\u2019ve had.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been back in the water for just over a month now. But it\u2019s just come in the mornings and do as much as you want and get back into the rhythm. There\u2019s been no structure, I\u2019m probably the most unfittest person in the squad at the moment which is quite embarrassing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m always last in and last out. It has been quite hectic out of the water\u2026the functions and the awards nights have been a priority\u2026the Olympics only comes around every four years and you dedicate so much time to swimming and everyone works around you so its time to give back and experience life outside of the pool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy return has been more about the fun rather than the purpose and the outcome\u2026and building that positive connection with the pool again\u2026.because we are here always doing the grinding, always doing the hard work\u2026all through the highs and lows so it\u2019s nice to have the time to be amongst the culture too\u2026we all become friends\u2026and talk about things other than swimming\u2026and enjoy being back\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo come back from Paris and have so many people come up to you and want to talk about the Olympics\u2026and parents saying \u2018you\u2019re my kids hero\u2019..it\u2019s georgeous..it\u2019s wonderful. And that actually makes me really proud about what I have done\u2026because I still don\u2019t see myself as an Olympic champion in a way\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of the Queensland
