STOCKTON, Calif., October 18. THE University of California's men's swimming team is in first place with 441 points after the first day of competition at the University of Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. <\/p>\n
The Golden Bears were perfect on the day, sweeping the first through third places in each event.<\/p>\n
Although men's swimming teams from Cal State Bakersfield, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and San Francisco State are competing at the invitational, only Cal and
\nPacific are scored under the Division I category. Pacific is in second place with 248 points.<\/p>\n
Cal's 200 freestyle relay team won the first event in a time of 1:25.78. In the day's second event, the 500 free, sophomore Ryan Lean won the race in 4:31.05, followed by teammates freshman Daniel Lysaught in 4:38.18 and junior Matt Schmelzer in 4:39.17.<\/p>\n
In the day's third event, the Bears' dominated the 200 IM. Junior John Dorr touched the wall first in 1:50.61. Sophomore Miguel Molina turned in the
\nrunner-up finish in 1:53.47, followed by junior Steve Rehrmann (1:53.63), junior Caleb Rowe (1:55.46), freshman Graham Lentz (1:56.28) and senior Jeff
\nNatalizio (1:57.39).<\/p>\n
Cal also was impressive in the 50 free, as two newcomers, freshmen Renato Gueraldi (20.41) and Rolandas Gimbutis (20.43) put together a 1-2 punch for
\nthe Bears. Junior Duje Draganja (20.73) and sophomore Milorad Cavic (21.03) placed third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\n
In the second relay of the day, the 400 medley, Cal again finished first in 3:19.84.<\/p>\n
The Bears finished the day off strong, as Lean won his second event, capturing 1650 free (15:47.43) race, followed by second-place finisher Lysaught (16:01.76) and Schmelzer in third (16:06.83).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
