I am sure someone’s face comes to mind when you think of the coach’s pet, or the warmup sprinter and even the Save up Sally swimmer. Read on to learn about the 10 different types of teammates that every team has.

The Happy-Go-Lucky Swimmer

This person always comes to practice with a positive attitude and the mindset of taking each day as an opportunity to get better. Happy-go-lucky swimmers typically work hard while having fun. These athletes are encouraging, enthusiastic and always smiling.

The Hard Worker

Hard workers consistently show up to practice early, do all the right things, have a great mindset and never fail to give 100% of their effort every single day. This swimmer is not only extremely dedicated and goal-oriented, but also genuinely in love with the sport. These athletes set the standard and are willing to put in the tough training to get the results that they are striving for!

The Clown

Every team has an athlete who loves to crack a good joke and make everyone around them laugh. This person enjoys coming to practice and spending time with their teammates. They might not always be the hardest worker in the room, but they are bound to bring the energy and laughter that everybody needs.

The Complainer

This teammate always finds something wrong with the set, even if it’s not that big of a deal. Complainers usually don’t see the big picture behind certain practices or workouts because they are too busy picking out the reasons why it isn’t important.

The Warmup Sprinter

I am sure that at least one of your teammates’ faces has already come to mind. Every team has a handful of swimmers who take out their warmup speed like they would the 50 freestyle. The rest of the team hates to warm up in a lane with these swimmers in fear of getting run over.

The Middle of the Lane Swimmer

Sharing a lane with an athlete who swims down the middle of the lane can be infuriating. These swimmers tend to be unaware of how close they really are to the center. At least these athletes won’t swim down the middle of the lane when it comes time to race in a meet.

The Save Up Sally Swimmer

Save up Sally swimmers typically cruise the majority of their set or race, and then drop the hammer and go so fast toward the end of it. This strategy grinds the gears of every other swimmer who works hard the entire practice and takes their races out at a normal speed from the start.

The Never on Time Swimmer

There is always at least one swimmer who rolls into practice five minutes before the team is about to dive in. These athletes are usually pretty relaxed and slow moving. Not only do they miss out on practice time, but they don’t always make the effort to move with a purpose so that they can get in the water on time with everybody else.

The Coach’s Pet

Some swimmers want to make sure that they are always on their coach’s “good side.” These athletes will typically try and kiss up to their coaches so that they are well-liked and known as the “favorite.”

The Leader

Last but not least, you have the leader. This person not only sets a great example on the pool deck, but off the pool deck as well. Leaders display a multitude of qualities that many of their teammates will look up to. These athletes are confident, positive, influential, passionate, goal-oriented and personable.

Which teammate are you?
