Kyle Chalmers Coach Peter Bishop The Shock Appointment As The New Head Coach Of Dutch National Team<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a shock move, celebrated Australian coach Peter Bishop \u2013<\/strong> the man behind the career of Australia\u2019s Olympic freestyle sprint king Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> \u2013 has been appointed as the new head coach of the Dutch National Team.<\/p>\n

And Chalmers has been quick to congratulate and praise his former coach and mentor, writing on Instagram: \u201c The Netherlands has gained one of the greatest coaches\/people Australian swimming has ever had.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHuge congratulations to my coach, my mentor, my great friend, the master mind who took me from a 12-year-old footballer and turned me into an Olympic champion\/World record holding swimmer.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cWe achieved every single thing swimming had to offer together; we travelled the world and had so many incredible experiences over the past 12 years.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMy career to this point would not have been possible without you, your love and your support.\u00a0\u201cI am forever grateful for you and everything you have done and continue to do for me.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018I struggle to imagine my day-to-to-day swimming career without you, but I know our journey isn\u2019t finished just yet!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI am so proud of you and so excited for you to start your next journey! You deserve this opportunity more than anyone.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Netherlands have gained one of the greatest coaches\/people Australian swimming has ever had. I look forward to visiting real soon!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

It’s an appointment that comes eight months after Bishop was stood down from any involvement in the Paris Games.<\/p>\n

Swimming Australia confirmed that Bishop will leave his role at the South Australian Sports Institute to take up the head coaching role of the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation (The National Swim Team).<\/p>\n

In March, Bishop had been stood down from his position with the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) following an investigation, which forced Chalmers to link with Queensland-based coach Ashley Delaney \u2013 140 days out from the Paris Games.<\/p>\n

Chalmers, who won 100m freestyle gold under Bishop in Rio in 2016 and silver in 2021 in Tokyo, went on to win his third medal, his second silver in Paris, with Delaney in his corner.<\/p>\n

Swimming Australia revoked Bishop’s coaching accreditation until the end of the Olympic cycle, after they were “informed of (the) investigation and findings by the South Australia Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing into South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) high-performance swimming program\u201d meaning Bishop could not coach at the Paris Olympics, and he was moved to a different role within the SASI.<\/p>\n

At the time Swimming Australia said it respected the process and findings and had revoked Bishop’s coaching accreditation until the end of the Olympic cycle, \u201cupon which he is eligible to re-apply.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the man behind the success of the Marion SwimTeam who has a reputation for building a team, will now leave Australia to take over the reins of a Dutch team following their disappointing Games in Paris which saw them win just two bronze medals to Tes Schouten <\/strong>andCaspar Corbeau<\/strong> \u2013 in the women\u2019s and men\u2019s 200m breaststroke respectively.<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s Swimming Australia statement, Bishop said: \u201cIt\u2019s been a privilege to make a contribution to the Dolphins\u2019 success and I look forward to a new challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Australian Olympic head coach Rohan Taylor<\/strong> praised Bishop, saying he had played a significant role in Australian swimming, in particular Chalmers claiming three individual medals across three Olympics and also the success of Australia\u2019s greatest Paralympic swimmer, Matt Cowdrey<\/strong> \u2013 who won 23 Paralympic medals from three Games including 13 gold.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis contribution across Olympic and Paralympic Games is significant and greatly valued. Kyle (Chalmers) and Matt (Cowdrey) are legends of our sport and Bish (Bishop) has been integral to shaping their careers,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish Bish all the best as he takes the next step into a head coaching role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bishop\u2019s new role is one made famous by Jacco Verhaeren between Sydney 2000 and London 2012 \u2013 and who Bishop worked alongside when the celebrated Dutchman was the Australian Head Coach in Rio.<\/p>\n

It is unsure what the next steps will be for Chalmers, who returned home to South Australia post Paris, announcing his engagement to Norwegian swimmer Ingeborg L\u00f8yning <\/strong>and in a recent interview in the Adelaide Advertiser,<\/em> Chalmers revealed the couple were planning their weddings (a formal event in Norway and \u201cmore of a party\u201d in his hometown of Port Lincoln, on South Australia\u2019s Eyre Peninsula).<\/p>\n

But Chalmers has always been full of praise for Bishop who had been by his side through thick and thin.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy coach is my rock that I\u2019ve had for 12\u00a0years\u2026he\u2019s a best friend, a father figure, a mentor \u2013 someone that I spend 30 to 40\u00a0hours a week with, I travel the world with, so\u00a0losing him so close to the competition we\u2019d worked so hard for the last 12 years essentially, was very challenging,\u201d Chalmers told The Advertiser.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I don\u2019t think anyone could really understand how hard that is until you actually have to go through it yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chalmers had revealed he desperately wants to make LA in 2028 \u201cbut I\u2019m not\u00a0going to be the best 100 freestyler in Australia forever, it\u2019s just whether my body holds up until then.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mind definitely wants to continue to go even through to Brisbane 2032, it\u00a0would be amazing to go to a home Olympics, but I\u2019m definitely a realist in the fact that I know there\u2019s younger guys coming through in the sport who are going to beat me one day and I know that my body is going to give out inevitably at some point also,\u201d said Chalmers.<\/p>\n

Next year\u2019s World Championships in Singapore will mark his 10th year on the Australian Dolphins Swim Team and it\u2019s where he won seven medals \u2013 including gold in the 50 and 100m freestyle at the 2015 World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

And a likely reunion with \u201chis rock\u201d Peter Bishop<\/strong> who will now be wearing the Dutch tracksuit.<\/p>\n
