CLEMSON, S.C., October 16. THE South Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by Clemson Thursday afternoon in dual meet action at the McHugh Natatorium. Clemson defeated USC's men 134-109 with the USC women's squad falling 141-102 to the Tigers. <\/p>\n
Several Gamecock swimmers and divers did have success in the pool, including senior Istvan Bathazi, who won three individual events to lead the Carolina men's squad. Bathazi placed first in the 1000 freestyle (9:27.07), 200 individual medley (1:53.11) and 200 breaststroke (2:04.92). <\/p>\n
Senior Tamas Szucs also competed well with two first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:42.69) and 500 freestyle (4:38.01). Junior diver Andy Bradley also continues to shine with two first places finishes on the one-meter (328.58) and three-meter (351.15) boards.<\/p>\n
On the women's side, senior Jennifer Van Assen clamied two first place finishes in the 100 (52.16) and 200 freestyle (1:51.64) events. Van Assen and sophomore Haley Skaggs went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle with Skaggs coming in at 1:54.02. <\/p>\n
In the 50 freestyle junior Heather Skaggs and senior Ashleigh Bastak also finished 1-2 with times of 23.86 and 24.29 respectively. Carolina's divers also won on both the one-meter and three-meter boards. The Gamecocks took the top three spots on the three-meter board with Allison Brennan placing first (270.53), Holly Hodges second (267.15) and Lyndsey Havens third (266.33). Hodges also won the one-meter board with a score of 284.48. Brennan's score on the three-meter board qualifies her for the NCAA Zones competiton, the fourth women's diver to compete and qualify this season.<\/p>\n
Carolina returns to the pool next week with a two-day meet at the SMU Women's Classic. The meet will run October 24 and 25. Other schools participating include Indiana, Florida, Stanford and Washington. This will be South Carolina swimming & diving's first visit to SMU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
