But before we shift attention to those upcoming three days of action, Swimming World highlights three articles that grabbed attention over the past week.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the world record from Regan Smith in the 100-meter backstroke at the World Cup in Korea opened eyes. Smith clocked a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-regan-smith-sets-100-back-s-c-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short-course performance of 54.41<\/a> for her four laps, an effort that topped the previous world mark of 54.56, held by Australian Kaylee McKeown. Smith, who is gearing up for the World Short Course Championships at the end of the year, is now the world-record holder in the long course and short course versions of the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable news from the previous week included Ilya Kharun (Arizona State) and Leah Shackley (North Carolina State) starring in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ilya-kharun-leads-arizona-state-men-to-slight-lead-over-nc-state-leah-shackley-shines-in-wolfpack-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schools\u2019 dual-meet matchup<\/a>. Kharun headlined action with a mark of 43.95 in the 100 butterfly and a 1:38.74 effort in the 200 butterfly while Shackley produced a 50.40 swim in the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Other key news from the week was USA Swimming\u2019s announcement that Chris Plumb, the head man at Carmel Swim Club and Carmel High School, has been tabbed as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chris-plumb-to-lead-u-s-swim-team-at-short-course-worlds-full-usa-swimming-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States\u2019 head coach for December\u2019s World Short Course Championships<\/a> in Budapest. Plumb has consistently developed elite athletes and has been rewarded for his efforts with the first international head-coaching nod of his
