This choice will allow me to continue my training at Carmel, where I have grown so much as an athlete and person. I believe that dedicating this next year to training at Carmel is the best decision for my continued growth and development in the sport.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I want to emphasize that this decision is not a reflection on the college program I verbally committed to. My choice to defer is solely about my personal goals as an athlete at this stage in my career. When the time is right, I remain fully committed to pursuing my academic goals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019m grateful for the support of my family and coaches during this decision-making process.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Thank you for your understanding and continued support.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Alex Shackell<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shackell, a Paris Olympian, was one of the top recruits for the class of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>She was sixth in the 200 butterfly and was a prelims swimmer on the silver-medal winning 800 free relay for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More College News<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Olympian Alex Shackell De-Commits from Cal, Plans to Defer For a Year Olympian Alex Shackell has de-committed from Cal and will defer a year before starting her college career.
