{"id":597472,"date":"2024-10-11T19:59:23","date_gmt":"2024-10-12T02:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=597472"},"modified":"2024-10-11T19:59:23","modified_gmt":"2024-10-12T02:59:23","slug":"cal-men-sweep-first-place-finishes-on-first-day-vs-uc-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cal-men-sweep-first-place-finishes-on-first-day-vs-uc-san-diego\/","title":{"rendered":"Cal Men Sweep First Place Finishes on First Day vs UC San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Cal Men Sweep First Place Finishes on First Day vs UC San Diego<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The No. 1 California men&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving team had a dominating start to the Tritons Invitational after having first-place finishes in each event Friday afternoon to take a 144-81 lead after the first day of the invitational-style dual meet at UC San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>In the opening event of the day, the 200-yard medley relay, the Golden Bears&#8217; A lineup of junior <strong>Evan Petty,<\/strong> freshman <strong>Zachary Tan<\/strong>, sophomore<strong> Samuel Quarles<\/strong> and freshman<strong> Nans Mazellier<\/strong> finished with a time of 1:29.86. Cal&#8217;s B lineup of junior <strong>Tommy Roder<\/strong>, junior<strong> Luca Gissendaner<\/strong>, freshman <strong>August Vetsch<\/strong> and freshman <strong>Lucca Battaglini<\/strong> placed third with a final time of 1:30.45.<\/p>\n<p>In the very next event, the 500-yard freestyle, five Bears finished in the top five spots, led by junior <strong>Matthew Chai<\/strong> with a time of 4:18.79. Sophomore <strong>Keaton Jones<\/strong> followed shortly afterward with a time of 4:20.70, along with senior <strong>Robin Hanson<\/strong> (4:25.81), graduate student <strong>Tyler Kopp<\/strong> (4:26.48) and Mazellier (4:30.90).<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Ziyad Saleem<\/strong> claimed the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.20, as he was the lone Cal swimmer in the top three spots in the event.
