LARAMIE, Wyoming, October 12. THE Rice University women's team lassoed the University of Wyoming Cowgirls 141-96, in its season opener at Corbett Pool Saturday afternoon. <\/p>\n
Rice does not have a men's team.<\/p>\n
Rice won all but one of the day's swim events as Tamara Lehnertz, earned the only swimming event victory for the Cowgirls. She swam a time of 1:58.03 in the 200 freestyle which was good for the win. On the diving board, freshman Saara Haapanen, an Ontario, Canada native, won both the one and three meter dives with respective scores of 239.55 and 253.35. <\/p>\n
Wyoming placed second in five events on the day including the 1000 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke and the 400 medley relay. Laura Glaab, a freshman from Superior, Colo., placed second in the 1000 freestyle (10:55.14). Freshman Heidi Thorson, a Rozet, Wyo. native, placed second in the 50 freestyle (25.05) as well as in the 100 freestyle (54.58). Senior Janelyn Lilly placed second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:13.53 and the 400 medley relay team of Lilly, Erin Spadinger, Heidi Thorson and Katie Bigger swam a second place time of 4:01.92. <\/p>\n
Rice came into today\u2019s dual after defeating Colorado State last night 145-117 in their first action of the season. The Rice women\u2019s team will remain in the Rocky Mountains through Monday to take advantage of an opportunity to train in high altitude. The team will workout in Estes Park, Col., before returning<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter seeing results from Rice and CSU last night I had a feeling we were in for a battle today,\u201d said UW head coach Tom Johnson. \u201cI thought we stepped up against a great team and swam pretty well, our times far exceeded my expectations.
