Commonwealth Games Scotland Wants 2026 Decision As Glasgow Waits In Wings<\/h4>\n

Commonwealth Games Scotland<\/strong> (CGS) has called on the Scottish Government to decide whether Glasgow can host the 2026 multi-sport event.<\/p>\n

The State of Victoria, Australia, was due to stage the Games but withdrew in July 2023 citing rising costs<\/a> and agreed to pay the Commonwealth Games Federation<\/strong> (CGF) \u00a3190million (250million US dollars).<\/p>\n

The CGF announced a search for a new host to host the 23rd Games with Alberta, the only\u00a0confirmed potential bidder left for 2030, also halting its attempt to take what would be the centenary event to Canadian cities Calgary and Edmonton with the future of the Games under threat.<\/p>\n

CGS has formulated a concept to host the Games that wouldn’t require significant public investment with the majority of the \u00a3114million (150million US dollars) costs covered by the CGF, using the money secured from the Victorian government, and the remainder coming from “commercial opportunities.”<\/p>\n

The CGS foresees that staging the Games would benefit the local and national economies in the short and long-term as well as high-performance sport in Scotland and are calling on the Scottish government to make a decision.<\/p>\n

Glasgow hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014 with the pool programme staged at Tollcross International Swimming Centre<\/strong> where Australia dominated the swimming medal table with 57 medals, 29 more than second-placed England.<\/p>\n

Emma McKeon<\/strong> won her first senior international titles while the likes of Cate Campbell<\/strong>, Siobhan O’Connor<\/strong> and Hannah Miley<\/strong> also made trips to the top of the podium.<\/p>\n

Adam Peaty<\/strong> won his first senior title in the 100m breaststroke ahead of 2012 Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> to herald the start of a pioneering career.<\/p>\n

Ben Proud<\/strong> won the 50 free ahead of Cam McEvoy<\/strong> with the pair standing on the top two steps of the rostrum 10 years on at Paris 2024 – albeit with the Australian on top – while a 17-year-old called Duncan Scott<\/strong> made his senior debut in the colours of Scotland.<\/p>\n

Now it seems that Glasgow may well play host once more in what will be a busy spell for British swimmers with the 2024 European Championships being held in Paris.<\/p>\n

Commonwealth Games Scotland released a statement saying:<\/p>\n

“In April, CGS revealed details of an innovative, cost-effective and sustainable concept for the Games without the need for significant public investment. Since then, CGS has developed the concept with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and other stakeholders, including the Scottish and UK governments.<\/p>\n

“A fundamental part and principle of the project is that it does not require \u2013 nor has CGS asked for \u2013 any underwriting from Scottish or UK governments.<\/p>\n

“Unique to this opportunity, the Games will be funded by private income rather than the public purse, with the majority of costs covered by the CGF, using money secured in a compensation negotiation with the Victorian Government following their withdrawal as hosts in July 2023.<\/p>\n
