An early test <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/junior-pan-pacific-championships-teagan-odell-leah-shackley-lead-us-full-entry-lists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of the emerging depth<\/a> in countries lining the Pacific Ocean that happen to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/\/news\/junior-pan-pacific-championships-canberra-aus-milla-jansen-and-marcus-da-silva-to-carry-the-flag-for-australia\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some of the world\u2019s powers<\/a>, it\u2019s a fitting look, just after the Paris Olympics, at who could be on that stage four years from now in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The first morning session of the 2024 meet, kicking off in Canberra, Australia, offered a lot of American speed, with <strong>Luka Mijatovic<\/strong> leading the way.<\/p>\n<p>Mijatovic set the top time in prelims of the boys 200 freestyle, nearly taking down a national age-group record, and was quickest in the first of two heats of the 800 free ahead of the timed final later in the day, in the first morning at the Pool at Bruce ACT.<\/p>\n<p>The meet stretches through Saturday, with prelims at 9 a.m. local time (7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time the night before) and finals at 5 p.m. local (3 a.m. EDT).<\/p>\n<p>A reminder that only two swimmers from each nation can qualify for the top eight in each event. Finals will include the fastest heat of the boys 800 free, timed finals of the girls 1,500 free and the mixed 400 medley relay.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLFFOAngEsCv-K8HZv6xtZmqwo_pNZuCcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Livestream links<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/liveresults.swimming.org.au\/sal\/2024JPP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A look at the first prelims session:<\/p>\n<h4>Girls 200 freestyle<\/h4>\n<p>The United States set the top two times in prelims, with <strong>Madi Mintenko<\/strong> leading the way in 1:58.81 and <strong>Kennedi Dobson<\/strong> second in 1:58.90. That time is just off the 15-16 National Age-Group Record set last year by <strong>Maximus Williamson<\/strong> at 1:47.29. <strong>Gregg Enoch<\/strong> also set a best time by going 1:48.97.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans had the top three times, though team captain <strong>Jason Zhao<\/strong> is in the B final in 1:48.98. Fourth overall is <strong>Ethan Ekk<\/strong> of Canada, off a strong performance at Canadian Trials. <strong>Marcus Da<\/strong> <strong>Silva<\/strong> of Australia was that country\u2019s top qualifier in 1:49.39. That\u2019s 1.6 off her best from Trials. That duo was among four swimmers to enter with seed times in the 1:58s to their name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gregg Enoch<\/strong> completed a complex double by getting into the A final of the 200 fly in 1:59.46. He has been close to a second faster. <strong>Logan Robinson<\/strong> of the U.S. was fourth with the final sub-2-minute time in 1:59.57. That gave <strong>Luka Mijatovic,<\/strong> the third overall seed but the third-fastest American, a second swimmer of the session. He won his heat in a best time of 7:56.91, a second quicker than his seed.
