{"id":595366,"date":"2024-08-16T02:03:23","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T09:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=595366"},"modified":"2024-08-16T05:12:39","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T12:12:39","slug":"veteran-coach-matt-hurst-taking-reins-at-powerhouse-mercersburg-academy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/veteran-coach-matt-hurst-taking-reins-at-powerhouse-mercersburg-academy\/","title":{"rendered":"Veteran Coach Matt Hurst Taking Reins at Powerhouse Mercersburg Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Veteran Coach Matt Hurst Taking Reins at Powerhouse Mercersburg Academy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mercersburg is pleased to introduce <strong>Matt Hurst<\/strong> as the new head swimming coach.<\/p>\n<p>Hurst, who coached swimming at Penn State University and Southern Connecticut State University\u2013his alma mater, is excited to work with his longtime acquaintance and former coach, <strong>Glenn Neufeld<\/strong>, during a transition year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he decided he was moving on, he gave me a call and let me know that the job would be opening,\u201d said Hurst, who grew up in Haverford, PA, and was familiar with Mercersburg. \u201cWith the history of the program, strength of the academics, support of the administration and the alums, and obviously, the facility, the sky\u2019s the limit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurst swam in college, has 16 years of NCAA-level coaching experience, and has coached swimmers who qualified for the Olympics. Two athletes he coached competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics\u2013Shane Ryan represented Ireland, and Gabe Casta\u00f1o competed for Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Hurst, who comes to the position from Chelsea Piers Aquatics Club in Stamford, CT, will work closely during the 2024-25 school year with Neufeld, who has been at Mercersburg Academy since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst and foremost, he\u2019s a really good person and educator who happens to be a swim coach, and, more than anything else, that\u2019s what you need at a place like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercersburg.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercersburg<\/a>,\u201d said Neufeld, noting that Hurst will be working in the Office of College Counseling. \u201cWith his background in college coaching, it\u2019s really a natural fit, because if you\u2019ve done recruiting in the college environment, you\u2019ve got a sense of how kids look for schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neufeld was Hurst\u2019s coach for two years at Upper Main Line YMCA in Berwyn, PA. During the second year, Hurst was a postgraduate and helped Neufeld with the swimming program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve known him for about 25 years,\u201d said Hurst, 41. \u201cThe idea of sharing a deck with him again \u2026 that\u2019s one of those fairytale, storybook endings, especially if we end up winning Easterns, which is obviously the goal every year. This year, I think it\u2019s a little extra sweet because we\u2019ve got a good team coming in and the opportunity to do it. That\u2019s exciting from a professional level, a performance level, but it\u2019s also really exciting and heartwarming from a personal level, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Hurst contemplates his new role, his goal is to build a program where swimmers are autonomous in the pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy most important role as a coach is to make sure they don\u2019t need me,\u201d said Hurst. \u201cI\u2019m supposed to give them the tools and the space to think and learn and fail and create and understand. But at the end of the day, if they don\u2019t need me, I\u2019ve done my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He doesn\u2019t plan to make any major changes but to follow the course that has been set by the coaches who came before him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I bring an energy and a levity to the pool. Swimming is something we do. It\u2019s not who we are,\u201d said Hurst. \u201cIt\u2019s something that complements our daily lives and our goals and our routines, and at times it can be a reprieve from whatever else is going on. That doesn\u2019t mean that life outside the pool is chaotic or troubling, but it can be challenging at times, and the pool can be a place to come and be with friends and challenge ourselves in a different way. I know that\u2019s been done before I got there, but that\u2019s something I look to continue as we again focus on the development of young men and women in the pursuit of their goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurst, his wife, Theresa, and their children, Annabelle, 9, and Michael, 7, will relocate to Mercersburg in August.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Mercersburg Academy.
