{"id":595281,"date":"2024-08-12T17:30:59","date_gmt":"2024-08-13T00:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=595281"},"modified":"2024-08-12T17:30:59","modified_gmt":"2024-08-13T00:30:59","slug":"paris-olympics-great-britain-basking-in-first-ever-artistic-swimming-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paris-olympics-great-britain-basking-in-first-ever-artistic-swimming-medal\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris Olympics: Great Britain Basking in First Ever Artistic Swimming Medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Paris Olympics: Great Britain Basking in First Ever Artistic Swimming Medal<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While it was China that claimed another Olympic gold medal in artistic swimming to close out action in the pool, it was a duo from Great Britain that made history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kate Shortman<\/strong> and <strong>Izzy Thorpe<\/strong> claimed the silver medal in the duet free routine in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>The British duo scored 558.5367 points to earn the country&#8217;s first ever Olympic medal in artistic swimming.<\/p>\n<p>They are childhood friends, and their mothers also used to compete as a pair in artistic swimming. Their final performance was to a theme of Rising Phoenix to score 294.5085 &#8211; which vaulted the duo into the medals after being just outside the top three after the technical performance.<\/p>\n<p>They were the only duo in the top five at the Paris Olympics to not be sisters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just the most incredible cherry on the top of over a decade\u2019s worth of friendship and training together,\u201d Shortman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-gb\/news\/uknews\/kate-shortman-and-izzy-thorpe-earn-gb-s-first-ever-artistic-swimming-medal\/ar-AA1oAd8i?ocid=BingNewsVerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told The Independen<\/a>t. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen each other at our very worst and our very best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a hard and very long journey but we\u2019re so happy that we\u2019re here and we get to do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s <strong>Wang Liuyi<\/strong> and <strong>Wang Qianyi<\/strong> won the gold with a score of 566.4783.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bregje de Brouwer<\/strong> and <strong>Noortje de Brouwer<\/strong> took the bronze for the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s<strong> Jamie Czarkowski<\/strong> and <strong>Megumi Field<\/strong> finished 10th.<\/p>\n<p>But all eyes were on Great Britain and might be in the future. Thorpe is 23 and Shortman is 22, so 2028 is not out of the realm of possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cL.A. is four years away and we\u2019ve gone from 14th to second with these new rules, so anything is possible,\u201d Thorpe told The Independent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/paris-2024\/results\/artistic-swimming\/duet\/fnl-000100--\" target=\"_blank\"
