Olympic Men\u2019s Water Polo: Marko Vavic, Adrian Weinberg Lead U.S. to Semifinals in Shootout Win<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two saves by Adrian Weinberg<\/strong> and a fifth-round goal from Marko Vavic<\/strong> led the United States to an 11-10 win over Australia in a penalty shootout in the Olympic quarterfinals Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The win sends the U.S. into the semifinals for the first time since it won silver in 2008. The Americans are two wins from gold and one win from any medal, starting with a semifinal against Serbia on Friday.<\/p>\n

Alex Bowen\u2019s<\/strong> goal with 32 seconds left tied the game at 7 and sent it to penalties. Weinberg, who made 13 saves in regulation, denied Milos Maksimovic<\/strong> in the third round after the first four scorers converted. Bowen made it 10-9 to the U.S., then Weinberg stoned Chaz Poot<\/strong> to consolidate the lead.<\/p>\n

It was enough to weather the U.S. missing its first chance to win the match, in the fourth round of the shootout with Alex Obert<\/strong> saved by Nic Porter.<\/strong> But Vavic swam to the spot and buried his chance to send the U.S. onward.<\/p>\n
