Olympic Women\u2019s Water Polo: Rachel Fattal Goal Leads U.S. Into Semis over Hungary<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Rachel Fattal<\/strong> goal with 3:02 to play led the United States past Hungary in a 5-4 defensive struggle Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Olympic women\u2019s water polo tournament.<\/p>\n

Fattal\u2019s goal sends the U.S. into the semifinals against Australia in the earlier semifinal on Wednesday. The Aussies took down Greece, 9-6. The U.S. is chasing its fourth consecutive gold medal, a run that began with wins over Australia in the semifinals and Spain in the final in London.<\/p>\n

The other semifinal pits Spain against the Netherlands. The Tokyo silver medalist Spain routed Canada, 18-8. Netherlands, world champion in 2023, got there via an 11-8 win over Italy.<\/p>\n

The Hungary-U.S. quarterfinal was not for the faint of heart. The U.S. shot 5-for-22 (23 percent), while Hungary was held to 4-for-31 (13 percent) and just 2-for-23 (nine percent) on action shots. Hungary\u2019s two danger players \u2013 Rita Keszthelyi<\/strong> and Krisztina Garda<\/strong> \u2013 were limited to two goals on 2-for-17 shooting. Ashleigh Johnson was absolutely dominant with 17 saves.<\/p>\n
