Paris Olympics, Day 6 Finals Heat Sheet: Summer McIntosh, Tatjana Smith Seek Second Gold Medal Each<\/strong><\/p>\n

Four finals will be on the docket Thursday evening at La D\u00e9fense Arena for the sixth evening of swimming finals at the Paris Olympics: the women’s 200 butterfly, men’s 200 backstroke, women’s 200 breaststroke and women’s 800 freestyle relay. The session also includes the men’s 50 freestyle semifinals, women’s 200 backstroke semifinals and men’s 200 IM semifinals.<\/p>\n

The opening final of the night features\u00a0Summer McIntosh<\/strong> and\u00a0Regan Smith<\/strong>, already individual medal winners in Paris, will be in the middle lanes for the 200 fly. McIntosh is favored and trying to add to her gold medal from the 400 IM Monday evening. Defending champion\u00a0Zhang Yufei<\/strong> will swim from lane three, with 2023 Worlds silver medalist\u00a0Elizabeth Dekkers<\/strong> in lane three.<\/p>\n

Hubert Kos<\/strong> is the big favorite in the men’s 200 back final, particularly after 2016 gold medalist\u00a0Ryan Murphy<\/strong> missed the final in 10th place. He will have\u00a0Roman Mityukov\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Pieter Coetze<\/strong> on either side while\u00a0Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> looms from lane eight. Later on the session, 100 breaststroke Olympic champion\u00a0Tatjana Smith<\/strong> has lane five in the final next to American\u00a0Kate Douglass<\/strong>, while February’s world champion\u00a0Tes Schouten<\/strong> will be alongside the favorites.<\/p>\n

Australia is the likely winner in the men’s 800 free relay, having qualified more than six seconds clear of the field in prelims over Hungary and China, with the Americans sitting in fourth place and three new swimmers, including\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, likely to join the team at night.<\/p>\n

In semifinal action, the top seeds out of the morning Australia’s\u00a0Cameron McEvoy<\/strong> (50 free), China’s\u00a0Peng Xuwei\u00a0<\/strong>(200 back) and Japan’s\u00a0Daiya Seto<\/strong> (200 IM), with all possible medal contenders advancing.<\/p>\n
