﻿{"id":593038,"date":"2024-07-29T13:39:50","date_gmt":"2024-07-29T20:39:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=593038"},"modified":"2024-07-30T01:23:07","modified_gmt":"2024-07-30T08:23:07","slug":"mollie-ocallaghan-gets-maiden-solo-olympic-gold-in-200-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mollie-ocallaghan-gets-maiden-solo-olympic-gold-in-200-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris Olympics, Day 3: Mollie O\u2019Callaghan&#8217;s Powerhouse Final Lap Gets Maiden Individual Gold in 200 Freestyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Paris Olympics, Day 3: Mollie O\u2019Callaghan&#8217;s Powerhouse Final Lap Gets Maiden Individual Gold in 200 Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising star <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> has overpowered defending champion, fellow Australian and club mate <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> in a classic green and gold duel in the pool to claim 200m freestyle gold at the Paris la Defense Arena.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating her own special slice of history \u2013 not only her first individual Olympic gold medal but the 100th swimming medal by an Australian female since <strong>Fanny Durack<\/strong> and <strong>Mina Wylie <\/strong>\u00a0created history with their 1-2 finish in the 100m freestyle in the first ever women&#8217;s Olympic swimming event held in Stockholm in 1912.<\/p>\n<p>Fitting that the 100th and 101st Aussie medals by swimmers in the green and gold was also a quinella of gold and silver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Callaghan produced a barnstorming final 50 metres \u2013 with her signature six beat kick to break the Olympic record of 1:53.50 set by Titmus in Tokyo three years ago and to win her first individual gold in her first individual final, clocking 1:53.27 with her training partner half a second behind in 1:53.81.<\/p>\n<p>A brave <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> from Hong Kong, silver medallist behind Titmus in Tokyo, scared the life out of the two Australians to lead through the first 150 metres \u2013 over taken by the <strong>Dean Boxall<\/strong> coached duo &#8211; to finish with bronze in 1:54.55.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/paris-2024\/schedule\/swimming?day=27-july\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2024-olympic-games-coverage-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Paris Olympics Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the first quinella for Australia since <strong>Ian Thorpe<\/strong> and <strong>Grant Hackett<\/strong> in the men\u2019s 400m freestyle in Athens in 2004 \u2013 and O\u2019Callaghan was only five months old &#8211; and the first 1-2 finish in a women&#8217;s Olympic final since<strong> Susie O&#8217;Neill<\/strong> and <strong>Petria Thomas<\/strong> in the 200m butterfly in Atlanta in 1996.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Callaghan, who came back to win the gold after losing her world record to Titmus at the Australian Trials, saying after the race ion Channel 9: \u201cIt\u2019s such an honour to be amongst everyone -especially Arnie, coming up against her. She is an absolute gun who races like an absolute beast and it\u2019s an honour to train alongside her and to have such a great team around us &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter losing my world record you have to accept the challenge \u2013 and at the end of the day you can either run or you can fight and I chose to fight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m always striving for more and I put a lot of pressure on myself and my expectations are very high &#8211; that was an amazing race and I\u2019m always looking for a bit more and I just had to trust my coach Dean Boxall for what\u2019s best and to be honest I did it for the country I didn\u2019t do it for myself \u2013 I am racing for all these people (back in Australia).\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a message as she prepares for the 100m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle relay with Titmus, saying: \u201cThere is less pressure now \u2013 I get to swim freely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Titmus praised Boxall, saying: \u201cDean will be so proud of his athletes, he\u2019s a brilliant coach..I believe the best in the world and to manage this and to have the two fastest girls in the world it\u2019s a credit to him and it\u2019s not just us \u2013 on night one he contributed to every medal that we won as a coach and we feel very blessed to have him in our corner and if you wanted anyone backing you then it\u2019s Dean and so we\u2019ll be forever grateful to him\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_593089\" style=\"width: \u00a0Haughey, who powered through the first 150 metres ahead of the Aussie girls who came into the race as short-priced favorites for a 1-2 finish with the fastest two times in historyafter their dual world record breaking race at the Australian Trials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haughey going through the first 50m in 26.72, the 100m split in 55.70, before maintaining her lead as the field turned for home in 1:24.97.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Callaghan fifth through the 100m in 56.07 and Titmus fourth at the first turn and second through the rest of the race \u2013 unable to get far enough in front to counter Mollie O\u2019s powerful finish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with millions of Australians watching at home and the hundreds more in the grandstand in Paris, their collective hearts in their mouths, the St Peters Western pair switched on the afterburners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Callaghan, who has built a reputation from an early age for her underwater kicking prowess, wasted no time in letting the field know that she was heading home for gold \u2013 unleashing that trademark finishing burst.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her training partner Titmus, the defending champion from three years ago and who had already beaten fellow superstars <strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> (CAN) and <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> (USA) in the opening night 400m freestyle blockbuster, had no answers \u2013 hanging on for silver with a final lap of 28.64.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_593087\" over the final stages -with her last lap of 29.58.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Callaghan, physically shaking as she locked in her goggles before the start, has a well-documented battle with nerves, working to overcome the pre-race jitters, saying after her semi-final: \u201cI am a lot calmer than I was at (Trials)\u2026. the pressure of having that world record previously really weighed on me but to walk in here I thought (just think) this is (your) first Olympics.
