JAMUL, Calif., October 5. THIRTEEN year-old Courtney Weigand, of Jamul CA, looks to have a limitless future in open water swimming.<\/p>\n
The youngest swimmer to place in the three mile Gatorman swim at La Jolla, Sunday, September 7, she had just returned from the grueling Waikiki 2.4 mile swim on September 1, where she was 17th woman finisher, and 113th overall and second in the 13-14 female age group. She was one of the youngest finishers in the race of 1100 that had only 361 finishers and resulted in the largest rescue operation on the history of Waikiki Beach. <\/p>\n
Courtney swam to a 5th place victory in the female 13-18 category in the three mile La Jolla Gatorman. Courtney has been swimming in open water competitions since she was six, and had been looking forward to swimming the three mile Gatorman race since she was seven. <\/p>\n
Courtney was the 2002 Southern California 11-14 Female Open Water High Point Champion, and her goal is to be on the National Open Water Swim Team. On September 14, Courtney swam as an elite swimmer in the Tiberon mile in San Francisco where she finished 99th overall last year among men, women and wetsuits in a field of over 700 swimmers, and was 44th out of the 47 elite swimmers competing. <\/p>\n
This year she was 31st female elite finisher. Courtney swam Tiburon last year by special permission because she was only twelve years old, and the minimum entry age is thirteen. Courtney loves the water and loves the ocean.
