EAST MEADOW, NY – The U.S. women’s swim team won the team crown and $50,000 in prize money by defeating Germany, 78-44, here on Saturday in the final round of the Goodwill Games’ swimming competition. <\/p>\n
The Americans started off the meet with a dominating win in the 400m medley relay and never looked back. Shelly Ripple, Staciana Stitts, Jenny Thompson and Richelle Fox posted the winning time of 4:07.99,over 15 seconds ahead of Germany. The U.S. won 10 of 14 events in the final dual meet, including two wins from Cristina Teuscher in the 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley. The American women were undefeated in the round-robin format, besting China, the World All-Stars and Germany. <\/p>\n
In the overall standings, the U.S. claimed four gold medals, while the World All-Stars had the top time in seven events. Germany won two gold medals, while Yan Chen was China’s lone gold medal winner, posting the fastest time in the 200m individual medley on the final night of the competition. Winning individual goal medals for the U.S. were Teuscher (800m freestyle, 8:42.65), Lea Maurer (100m backstroke, 1:02.14) and Thompson (100m butterfly, 58.72). The Americans’ 400m medley relay team of Ripple, Stitts, Thompson and Fox also recorded the best time of the week with a 4:07.99. <\/p>\n
Penny Heyns from South Africa, swimming for the World All-Stars, was the only female swimmer at the Goodwill Games to win gold medals in more than one individual event with the top time in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke. <\/p>\n
