{"id":592736,"date":"2024-07-28T03:01:53","date_gmt":"2024-07-28T10:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=592736"},"modified":"2024-07-28T04:28:31","modified_gmt":"2024-07-28T11:28:31","slug":"paris-olympics-day-2-prelims-tatjana-smith-heads-100m-breaststroke-prelims-in-105-00","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paris-olympics-day-2-prelims-tatjana-smith-heads-100m-breaststroke-prelims-in-105-00\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris Olympics, Day 2 Prelims: Tatjana Smith Heads 100m Breaststroke Prelims In 1:05.00"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new champion will be crowned in the women&#8217;s 100m breaststroke with <strong>Tatjana Smith<\/strong> leading the way after the Sunday morning prelims at La Defense Arena.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-lydia-jacoby-pulls-stunner-to-win-100-breast-lilly-king-third\/\">Lydia Jacoby won the title three years ago in Tokyo<\/a> as the 17-year-old from Anchorage pulled off a shocker to become the first swimmer from Alaska to claim an Olympic medal.<\/p>\n<p>However, it has been a testing time for Jacoby who didn&#8217;t make the cut for Paris 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-olympic-trials-lilly-king-headed-to-third-games-in-100-breast-ella-nelson-edges-lydia-jacoby\/\">as she finished third<\/a> behind <strong>Lilly King<\/strong> and <strong>Emma Weber<\/strong> at the US trials.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the four fastest women all-time lined up in the French capital in the form of world record-holder King, <strong>Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong> (1:04.35) and <strong>Tang Qianting<\/strong> (1:04.39).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/paris-2024\/schedule\/swimming?day=27-july\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2024-olympic-games-coverage-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Paris Olympics Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li>World Record: Lilly King, USA &#8211; 1:04.13 (2017)<\/li>\n<li>Olympic Record: Tatjana Smith (nee Schoenmaker), RSA &#8211; 1:04.82 (2021)<\/li>\n<li>Tokyo Olympic Champion: Lydia Jacoby, USA &#8211; 1:04.95<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Smith<\/strong> (nee Schoenmaker) won silver behind Jacoby in Japan and she was by some margin the fastest qualifier in Paris in 1:05.00 ahead of Tang, the Asian record-holder and 2024 rankings leader, who clocked 1:05.63 and <strong>Mona McSharry<\/strong>, 0.19 outside her Irish record in 1:05.74, the second-fastest time of her career.<\/p>\n<p>The trio were the only women inside 1:06 with <strong>Suzuki Satomi<\/strong> (1:06.04) fourth through ahead of\u00a0King &#8211; with Rio 2016 gold and Tokyo bronze among her silverware &#8211; who went 1:06.10.<\/p>\n<p>At 19, <strong>Benedetta Pilato<\/strong> has featured on the global podium since she won 50 breast silver aged 14 at the 2019 worlds in Gwangju.<\/p>\n<p>Since then she has accumulated world and European titles but Sunday morning was only her second Olympic swim, three years after she was DQd in the Tokyo prelims with <strong>Arianna Castiglioni<\/strong> and <strong>Martina Carraro<\/strong> swimming the breaststroke legs on the women&#8217;s medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>She safely navigated the prelims in 1:06.19 ahead of <strong>Anastasia Gorbenko<\/strong> (1:06.22) with Meilutyte, the London 2012 champion, placing 10th in 1:06.34, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/\/news\/ruta-meilutyte-undergoes-surgery-on-foot-injury-as-paris-beckons\/\/\">less than five months after ankle surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Macarena Ceballos<\/strong> of Argentina clinched the 16th and final spot in 1:06.89.<\/p>\n<p>Smith led the prelims three years ago in Tokyo in 1:04.82 &#8211;
