PULLMAN, Wash, October 3. THE Washington State Women\u2019s swim team kicked off the 2003-04 season with an intra-squad scrimmage Friday at Gibb Pool. The Crimson squad pulled off the victory over the Gray squad, 691-572. Individually, Kayli Changstrom and Erin McCleave tied for first with 80 points apiece. <\/p>\n
The scrimmage, the Cougar Pentathlon, matched the Crimson squad against the Gray squad, while each swimmer competed against each other individually as well.<\/p>\n
Changstrom, a freshman from Loveland, Colo. led the Crimson team with a first place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (59.70). She added second place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 individual medley and a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Changstrom also had two third place finishes as a member of the 200 medley and freestyle relay teams.<\/p>\n
McCleave, a freshman from Rutherglen, Australia, led the Gray squad with three first place finishes along with one fifth place. She finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:00.50), 200 freestyle (1:56.50), and 100 IM (1:01.90). McCleave also finished second as a member of the 200 freestyle relay team.<\/p>\n
The rest of the top ten scorers included; Jane Copland and Laurie Greg with 69 points, Lesley Ouellette (67), Lindsay Backhouse (66), Nicole Chinn (65), Andria Giovanni (64), Kayla Littlefield (61), and Sasha Taylor (60).<\/p>\n
\u201cI was just excited to see some close races,\u201d WSU Head Coach Erica Quam said. \u201cI think this gives an indication that we do have people ready to put it out there and race. We have a lot more depth, a lot more versatility. I\u2019m excited for the season.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Cougars head to San Jose, Calif. to compete with San Jose State and Nevada, Friday October 17 at 4 p.m. Saturday, October 18, WSU takes on California at Berkeley, Calif. at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
