The 2024 Summer Olympics will begin July 26, and there will be 329 events in 32 sports, with roughly 10,500 athletes from 184 countries. This year\u2019s Games mark the third time that Paris will have hosted the event, becoming only the second city to do so. Swimming\u2019s 35 pool events will begin on Saturday, July 27, and will continue for nine days through Aug. 4 at the Paris La D\u00e9fense Arena. Sjostrom\u2019s best time is more than 3-tenths better than anyone else in the field, with Aussies <strong><b>Emma McKeon<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Cate Campbell<\/b><\/strong> having not qualified for the event. American <strong><b>Kate Douglass<\/b><\/strong>, who went 23.91 at Worlds in February, skipped the race at the U.S. Olympic Trials to focus on the 200 IM.<\/p>\n<p>The only others in the field who have ever gone sub-24 are Poland\u2019s <strong><b>Kasia Wasick<\/b><\/strong>, Australia\u2019s <strong><b>Shayna Jack<\/b><\/strong> and the United States\u2019 <strong><b>Simone Manuel<\/b><\/strong>, although Manuel\u2019s top swim came seven years ago. But Hafnaoui will not compete in Paris, so Finke is the slight favorite to defend the gold medal he won in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ireland\u2019s <strong><b>Dan Wiffen<\/b><\/strong>, fresh off a world title earlier this year and a time of 14:34.07 that moved him to No. 5 all-time, will be very tough here. Australia\u2019s <strong><b>Sam Short<\/b><\/strong> won bronze at last year\u2019s Worlds, while the veteran trio of <strong><b>Florian Wellbrock<\/b><\/strong>, <strong><b>Mykhailo Romanchuk<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/b><\/strong> will surely have a say in the final result. The two countries will face off in the final men\u2019s event of the Olympics with gold on the line. The Americans will have either <strong><b>Ryan Murphy<\/b><\/strong> or <strong><b>Hunter Armstrong<\/b><\/strong> on backstroke and then <strong><b>Nic Fink<\/b><\/strong> on breaststroke, <strong><b>Caeleb Dressel<\/b><\/strong> on butterfly and either <strong><b>Jack Alexy<\/b><\/strong> or <strong><b>Chris Guiliano<\/b><\/strong> on freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>China counters with a pair of stars in <strong><b>Qin Haiyang<\/b><\/strong> (breaststroke) and <strong><b>Pan Zhanle<\/b><\/strong> (freestyle) plus a veteran backstroker in <strong><b>Xu Jiayu<\/b><\/strong>. The key to keeping up will be managing a solid butterfly leg. Meanwhile, Australia has a great back three-fourths with <strong><b>Sam Williamson<\/b><\/strong>, <strong><b>Matt Temple<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Kyle Chalmers<\/b><\/strong>, but struggles on backstroke. That\u2019s because three women likely to be on this relay are current world record holders in their respective 100-meter events: backstroker <strong><b>Regan Smith<\/b><\/strong>, breaststroker <strong><b>Lilly King<\/b><\/strong> and butterflyer <strong><b>Gretchen Walsh<\/b><\/strong>. <strong><b>Kate Douglass<\/b><\/strong> is poised to anchor for a team that could win by two seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is always tough, particularly with <strong><b>Kaylee McKeown<\/b><\/strong> leading off, veteran <strong><b>Emma McKeon<\/b><\/strong> on fly and <strong><b>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/b><\/strong> anchoring, but breaststroke is a weak spot for the Aussies.
