The 2024 Summer Olympics will begin July 26, and there will be 329 events in 32 sports, with roughly 10,500 athletes from 184 countries. This year\u2019s Games mark the third time that Paris will have hosted the event, becoming only the second city to do so. Swimming\u2019s 35 pool events will begin on Saturday, July 27, and will continue for nine days through Aug. 4 at the Paris La D\u00e9fense Arena. Following is how Swimming World sees the action unfolding.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2024-olympic-games-coverage-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/paris-2024\/sports\/swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More Information<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>MEN\u2019S 400 FREESTYLE<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The race is on to become the first man ever under 3:40, and it might take such a performance to win the first Olympic gold medal in Paris. At last year\u2019s World Championships, Australia\u2019s <strong><b>Sam Short<\/b><\/strong> and Tunisia\u2019s <strong><b>Ahmed Hafnaoui<\/b><\/strong> both broke into the 3:40-range as their dual for gold came down to the wire, and earlier this year, Germany\u2019s <strong><b>Lukas Martens<\/b><\/strong> nearly broke the world record with his time of 3:40.33. The global mark has belonged to <strong><b>Paul Biedermann<\/b><\/strong> at 3:40.07 since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Hafnaoui will not compete at the Olympics, but we should expect Short, Martens and the other two men who won world titles since the Tokyo Games, Australia\u2019s <strong><b>Elijah Winnington<\/b><\/strong> and South Korea\u2019s <strong><b>Kim Woo-min<\/b><\/strong>, to be the main contenders, with Brazil\u2019s <strong><b>Guilherme Costa<\/b><\/strong>, Germany\u2019s <strong><b>Oliver Klemet<\/b><\/strong> and Austria\u2019s <strong><b>Felix Aubock<\/b><\/strong> in the mix.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>World Record: <\/b><\/strong>3:40.07 Paul Biedermann, GER (Rome 7-26-09)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>2024 World Rankings:<br \/>\n<\/b><\/strong>3:40.33\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1. Titmus will try to become only the second Australian female to repeat as an Olympic champion in swimming, joining <strong><b>Dawn Fraser<\/b><\/strong> (100 freestyle in 1956, 1960 and 1964).<\/p>\n<p>Titmus nearly broke her own global mark at Australia\u2019s Olympic Trials as she reaffirmed her status as favorite, but we can expect McIntosh and Ledecky to each bring their best swims in the Olympic final. <strong><b>Erika Fairweather<\/b><\/strong> broke 4:00 for the first time in last year\u2019s Worlds final and won gold at the lightly-attended global meet at Doha in February. Veteran <strong><b>Cate Campbell<\/b><\/strong> just missed qualifying for her fifth Olympic team, but the other three swimmers from the Tokyo final \u2014 <strong><b>Emma McKeon<\/b><\/strong>, <strong><b>Meg Harris<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Bronte Campbell <\/b><\/strong>\u2014 are all back alongside <strong><b>Shayna Jack<\/b><\/strong>, who missed Tokyo due to a doping suspension, but is the 10th-fastest swimmer ever in the event.<\/p>\n<p>The United States could keep it close, though, with 2016 Olympic champion <strong><b>Simone Manuel<\/b><\/strong> returning to form, while <strong><b>Kate Douglass<\/b><\/strong>, <strong><b>Torri Huske<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Gretchen Walsh<\/b><\/strong> have all emerged as forces in this event. China will be led by <strong><b>Yang Junxuan<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Zhang Yufei<\/b><\/strong> while aiming for the country\u2019s first medal in this event since 1996. Dressel is no longer the clear-cut top American swimmer in the 100 free, thanks to the emergence of <strong><b>Jack Alexy<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Chris Guiliano<\/b><\/strong>, while all six American relay qualifiers went sub-48 at the U.S. Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n<p>The path to gold will not be easy, though, as <strong><b>Kyle Chalmers<\/b><\/strong> anchors for 2023 world champion Australia, while China has depth surrounding 100 free world record holder <strong><b>Pan Zhanle<\/b><\/strong>. Italy is led by <strong><b>Alessandro Miressi<\/b><\/strong>, and France\u2019s team features <strong><b>Maxime Grousset<\/b><\/strong>.
