COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo, September 29. FORTY swimmers from across the country have been selected to the 2004 National Junior Team by USA Swimming, the National Governing body for the sport of swimming. <\/p>\n
All 40 athletes will be invited to a three-day camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., to be held October 2-5, 2003. The team will stay and train at the Olympic Training Center and will be educated about nutrition, scientific advancements in the sport, doping control, media training and also will swim and work out in the Olympic training facilities. <\/p>\n
The team is made up of the fastest swimmers in each Olympic event except the 50m free. Selected boys must be 17 years old and under, while girls must be 15 and under. Swimmers who have previously been named to the National Junior Team, or those who have represented the U.S. at a higher-level competition are not eligible. <\/p>\n
The National Junior Team program began in 1989 with the first team selected competing in 1990. Since its inception, the Junior Team has boasted at least one future Olympian in each class before the 2000 games. Notable former Junior Team members include 2000 Olympians Anthony Ervin, Josh Davis, Nate Dusing, Lindsay Benko, Misty Hyman and world record-holders Ian Crocker and Natalie Coughlin among others.<\/p>\n
