It was won by Champion as part of the Australasia 800 freestyle relay team.<\/p>\n<p>Champion was the lone New Zealand swimmer on that quartet and remained New Zealand\u2019s lone swimming gold medalist until <strong>Danyon Loader<\/strong> in 1996. The medal was given to the NZOC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportzhub.com\/article\/new-zealands-first-ever-olympic-gold-medal-recovered.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by an Australian donor whose family<\/a> received the medal from Champion\u2019s family after his death in 1939. It was given to that family with the intention of eventual repatriation to New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We never saw it as ours exclusively,\u201d <strong>Anne Dillon<\/strong>, a member of the family, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2024\/07\/07\/nzs-first-olympic-gold-medal-returned-after-more-than-a-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told 1NewsNZ<\/a>, \u201cand we want it shared with the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">New Zealand&#8217;s first ever Olympic gold medal, won by swimmer Malcolm Champion at the 1912 Stockholm recovered. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qSjUxcPsuF\">https:\/\/t.co\/qSjUxcPsuF<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bc9YJAGNUc\">pic.twitter.com\/bc9YJAGNUc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Steve Knowles (@Sportzhub) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sportzhub\/status\/1809759377458602395?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 7, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re extremely pleased to have recovered such a significant and special treasure from New Zealand\u2019s sporting past,\u201d NZOC CEO <strong>Nicki Nicol<\/strong> said. \u201cWe\u2019re extremely thankful to both the donor, and members of Malcolm Champion\u2019s wider whanau, who we\u2019ve met with, and who are thrilled it has been recovered and will be shared with all of New Zealand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The medal will travel with New Zealand to future Olympics, including this summer in Paris, where it will be put on display at the country\u2019s section of the Olympic village. It will be displayed for the New Zealand public at the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame\u2019s new building in Cambridge, construction of which is slated to start this year.<\/p>\n<p>Champion was born in 1883 on Norfolk Island, now an Australian territory, but moved to Auckland as a teen. He was 28 when he traveled to Stockholm for the Olympics, where he joined Australia natives<strong> Cecil Healy, Leslie Boardman<\/strong> and <strong>Harold Hardwick<\/strong> on the quartet, replacing <strong>Bill Longworth<\/strong> due to illness. Hardwick won bronzes in the 400 and 1,500 free, Healy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fitting-remembrance-day-tribute-to-olympic-champion-and-australian-war-hero-cecil-healy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a silver in the 100 free<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Champion was eliminated in the semifinal of the 400 free and did not finish in the final of the men\u2019s 1,500 free. He had been Australasia\u2019s flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Champion retired from swimming at age 31, a 31-time national champion denied another Olympics by World War I. He died at age 56 in Auckland. He was an inaugural inductee to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame upon its founding in 1990. He is also the only New Zealander in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, thanks to the 1912 relay\u2019s induction in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing and definitely inspiring to see such a cool part of New Zealand\u2019s sporting history,\u201d Olympic swimmer <strong>Hazel Ouwehand<\/strong> said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great reminder of how enduring the Olympics are and the rich legacy that we
