She had to pause when the announcers mentioned that if Ledecky wins the 800 freestyle at the Paris Olympics this summer, it would make her the first woman to win four straight gold medals in the same event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I was like, wait, I would?,\u201d Ledecky shared Sunday. \u201cThese things kind of go in one ear and out the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of that is just a matter of volume \u2013 Ledecky has won so often and for so long that she requires new echelons of achievement that only she populates. But it also speaks to how Ledecky arrived here: By eschewing concern about her legacy or her accolades and applying her legendarily laser focus onto immediate, granular goals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2024-us-olympic-trials-indianapolis\">Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2024\/u-s-olympic-team-trials---swimming-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So no, Ledecky is not doing the math that, with four events at the Paris Olympics, she could add to her 10 career Olympic medals and surpass the three-way tie for the most decorated American female Olympian shared by <strong>Natalie Coughlin, Dara Torres<\/strong> and <strong>Jenny Thompson.<\/strong> She\u2019s not cognizant that her next gold will level her with Thompson on eight golds, the most for an American woman, or that two golds will tie her with <strong>Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis, Larisa Latynina<\/strong> and <strong>Paavo Nurmi<\/strong> for the second-most all-time, trailing only <strong>Michael Phelps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That isn\u2019t what gets Ledecky out of bed and into the pool each morning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_589010\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-589010\" data-attachment-id=\"589010\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/as-history-beckons-in-paris-katie-ledecky-keeps-focus-on-the-details\/katie-ledecky-300\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/katie-ledecky-2024-Olympic-Trials-5169-Edit.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1000,750\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4.5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Peter H. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI hear them, I see them. But I don&#8217;t really focus on them,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cAnd that&#8217;s one. I know there are a couple others out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Ledecky wanted to start tracking the historic aspects of her career \u2026 it would take some time. She has, after all, been the first to do so many things, among them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-olympic-trials-katie-ledecky-tops-800-free-with-paige-madden-second\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winning the same event at four straight Olympic Trials<\/a> and at seven straight World Championships (both the 800 free). She is second all-time in gold medals won at World Championships with 21 and third in total medals with 26 (to Phelps in both, with <strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong> in the latter).<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky is notoriously secretive (though respectfully apologetic) about her goal-setting process. She\u2019s aiming for achievements \u201cthat excite me,\u201d in terms of performance. Almost always, that\u2019s against the clock or her peers, not swimmers of past generations.<\/p>\n<p>She graciously leaves the historic considerations for others. Maybe someday she\u2019ll revisit that, once the short-term goals no longer hold sway. But that won\u2019t happen before or at Paris, where it\u2019ll remain far from the list of things that motivate her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just stay focused on my own goals,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cAnd I know I don&#8217;t share my goals with you guys. But I will share that my goals are not to be the first person to do this, to be the first person to do that and join this person and this person as the only ones that have done this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goals are very time-focused and splits-focused and technically focused. The rest is what it is. And you guys can write about it. You guys can focus on it.
