EAST MEADOW, NY – New York natives, Cristina Teuscher, Lea Maurer and Richelle Fox, all won events as the U.S. women’s swim team defeated China 88-34 on the first day of swimming at the 1998 Goodwill Games. <\/p>\n
Teuscher of New Rochelle and Columbia University set two Goodwill Games records with a win in the 200m freestyle with a 1:59.63 (the previous record was 1:59.72 by Germany’s Franziska Van Almsick from 1994) and swam on the record-breaking 400m freestyle relay. Teuscher also won the 400m freestyle in 4:12.16. Maurer of Crestwood led off the winning medley relay and won the 100m backstroke with a 1:02.51 and was second in the 200m backstroke with a 2:18.73. Fox of Scotia anchored the medley relay to victory and won the 100m butterfly in 1:00.74. All three swim for John Collins at the Badger Swim Club in Larchmont, N.Y. <\/p>\n
Jenny Thompson also broke two meet records, anchoring for Ashley Tappin, Teuscher and Sylvia Bereknyei in the 400m freestyle relay. The team’s time of 3:43.98 broke a 1990 East German meet record. Thompson won the 50m freestyle by 0.01 seconds over Tappin (25.77 to 25.78) and set the Games’ record in the 100m freestyle with a 55.56. <\/p>\n
