AS part of our 11-day series highlighting the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association\u2019s release of the 2013-14 All-America lists, <i>Swimming World<\/i> will also be looking at the history of each event that is part of the high school schedule. Today, we&#8217;re looking at the 500-yard free. Upland&#8217;s Jeff Kostoff and El Dorado&#8217;s Janet Evans posted some of the most iconic and historic swims in high school history with their performances in the middle-distance event.<\/p>\n<p>It took 30 full years for someone to dethrone Kostoff as the top 500-yard freestyler in high school history. Kostoff&#8217;s amazing 4:16.39 from 1983 was only truly threatened once in those 30 years before Jack Conger came along with a stunning 4:13.87 in 2013. Other than Larsen Jensen&#8217;s scorching 4:16.93 from 2003, only seven of those years had a swimmer even break 4:20.<\/p>\n<p>Kostoff set the mark at the CIF 3A High School Championships in Monterey Park, Calif. At the time, his swim stood as the American record, and he became the first high school male since Andy Coan in 1974 to set an American record at a high school meet. He split the race 50.59, 1:42.35, 2:33.78, 3:24.91 and 4:16.39.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#8217;t really hear the noise in the water,\u201d Kostoff said about the crowd rising to its feet in support of his record at the time. \u201cBut I felt it. In 1988, Olympic gold medalist Evans blasted her way to a 4:37.30 at the CIF Southern Section 3A Championships. The performance broke Kim Brown&#8217;s high school record of 4:40.04 by nearly three seconds, and it would take that type of effort to finally take down Evans&#8217; record 18 years later.<\/p>\n<p>Evans&#8217; swim, like Kostoff&#8217;s, proved to be nearly bulletproof for a very long time. Outside of her own 4:38.34 from 1989, only Janelle Atkinson (4:37.91, 2000) and Kaitlin Sandeno (4:39.64, 2001) managed to break 4:40 in the event until Kate Ziegler came along. Ziegler, who tested out the record with a 4:37.67 in 2005, finally supplanted Evans in 2006 with a stunning 4:33.35 in 2006. That record also stood for a few years as an American record before Katie Ledecky took it to another stratosphere with back-to-back swims of 4:31.38 and 4:28.71 in 2013 and earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Evans&#8217; record time would still do well even in today&#8217;s landscape. Although it&#8217;s still well off Ledecky&#8217;s astonishing American record from earlier this year, Evans would have finished second in the NISCA All-American lists in 2014.
