Sette Colli, Day 1: Benedetta Pilato Sets Italian 100m Breaststroke Record On Night Of Sizzling Speed In Rome<\/h4>\n

Benedetta Pilato<\/strong> set an Italian 100m breaststroke record of 1:05.44 on a night when championship records also fell at the Sette Colli<\/strong> meet in Rome.<\/p>\n

The 2022 world champion had a best of 1:05.70 from the Italian Championships that same year but she took that apart on Friday in the Eternal City.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old was out in 30.33 and back in 35.11 to take 0.23 from Arianna Castiglioni’s<\/strong> record that had stood since the Sette Colli in June 2021.<\/p>\n

It was the eighth-fastest time in the world this year with the rankings topped by Tang Qianting’s<\/strong> Asian record of 1:04.39.<\/p>\n

Angharad Evans<\/strong> made her second journey inside 1:06 with 1:05.91 for second with Martina Carraro<\/strong> third in 1:06.43.<\/p>\n

There were also championship records by Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> (50 fly), Thomas Ceccon<\/strong> (100 back) Simona Quadarella<\/strong> (1500 free).<\/p>\n

Sjostrom scorched to a time of 24.73 in the 50 fly, the fifth-fastest all-time headed by the Swede’s 24.43 world record dating back to July 2014.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom sliced a hefty 0.46 from her championship record set in 2018.<\/p>\n

Quadarella led throughout in the longest race in the pool with the two-time world champion in the event gradually extending her lead over Germany’s Isabel Gose.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Italian stopped the clock in 15:48.27, 0.54 inside her own championship mark of 15:48.81 that she posted back in 2021.<\/p>\n

Gose, the world bronze medallist, was 2.49secs back in second, clocking 15:50.56 with Germany teammate Leonie Martens<\/strong> third in 16:05.17.<\/p>\n

Ceccon opened the evening action with a championship record of 52.43 in the 100 back, the fifth-fastest in the world this year topped by Ryan Murphy’<\/strong>s 52.22 at the US trials.<\/p>\n

It also sliced 0.43 off the Italian’s championship mark of 52.86 set at last year’s meet.<\/p>\n

Ceccon led home an Italian clean sweep as he was joined on the podium by Michele Lamberti<\/strong> (53.35) and Christian Bacico<\/strong> (54.05).<\/p>\n

Victories For Haughey, Proud & Martinenghi At Sette Colli<\/h3>\n

Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> has been on fantastic form that has not only showcased quality but also consistency.<\/p>\n

The double Olympic silver medallist led throughout to win the 200 free by more than a second in 1:55.35 ahead of Mary-Sophie Harvey<\/strong> (1:56.38) and Freya Colbert<\/strong> (1:56.58).<\/p>\n

Ben Proud<\/strong> is looking for his first Olympic medal next month after sweeping every other title available to him.<\/p>\n

The Briton won the 50 free in 21.62 ahead of Leonardo Deplano<\/strong> (21.76) and Guillherme Santos<\/strong> (21.97).<\/p>\n

Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong> led throughout to win the 100m breaststroke, splitting 27.48\/31.42 to come home in 58.90 and the only man inside 59.<\/p>\n

Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> and Ludovico Blu Art<\/strong> were separated by 0.04 in 59.23 to 59.27 respectively while Adam Peaty<\/strong> – who is going for his third straight Olympic title in Paris – was next home in 59.51.<\/p>\n

Nyls Korstanje<\/strong> continued his fine form with a 50.90 victory in the 100 fly, a week after he secured the Dutch national title in 50.94.<\/p>\n

Guillhermo Costa<\/strong> overhauled Lucas Henveaux<\/strong> on the final 50 to claim the 400 free title in 3:45.33 to 3:45.81.<\/p>\n

Lauren Cox<\/strong> won the women’s 50 back in 28.01.<\/p>\n
