U.S. Olympic Trials: Caeleb Dressel Swims Twice, Regan Smith Aims for Third Win on Night Seven (Heat Sheet)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Night seven of the U.S. Olympic Trials begins with three consecutive finals, in the men’s 50 freestyle, women’s 200 backstroke and men’s 200 IM, and those races are followed with semifinal action in the men’s 100 butterfly and men’s 200 IM.<\/p>\n

The night starts with the fastest race in the pool, with\u00a0Chris Guiliano<\/strong> bidding to become the first American to swim the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle at one Olympics, but he faces extremely tough competition with\u00a0Jack Alexy<\/strong> and defending Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> on either side of him and\u00a0Michael Andrew<\/strong> and\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong> both in the thick of contention as well.<\/p>\n

Next up,\u00a0Regan Smith<\/strong> will try to join\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong> as a three-event winner at the Olympic Trials, and a run at reclaiming the world record in the 200 backstroke cannot be discounted. Last year,\u00a0Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> swam a mark of 2:03.14 to edge out Smith’s previous world mark of 2:03.35. The most likely swimmers to finish second are\u00a0Phoebe Bacon<\/strong> (seeded second) and\u00a0Claire Curzan<\/strong> (third) while we can’t count out\u00a0Katie Grimes<\/strong>, already on the team in the 1500 free and 400 IM.<\/p>\n

Finally,\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> was the top seed by more than a second in the 200 IM, with\u00a0Shaine Casas<\/strong>,\u00a0Carson Foster<\/strong> and\u00a0Kieran Smith<\/strong> joining him in the middle of the pool. Casas is trying to qualify for his first Olympic team while Foster and Kalisz qualified in the 400 IM earlier this week. Smith is already doing to Paris in the 400 free and 800 free relay.<\/p>\n

Semifinal action will include Dressel returning to the pool in the 100 fly, seeded first and swimming in the second semifinal. Dare Rose<\/strong>, last year’s World Championships bronze medalist in the event, will swim in lane three next to Dressel.\u00a0Zach Harting<\/strong> and\u00a0Luke Miller<\/strong> take center stage in the previous semi. Finally, in the women’s 200 IM semifinals, both\u00a0Kate Douglass<\/strong> and\u00a0Torri Huske<\/strong> swim in the first heat while\u00a0Alex Walsh<\/strong> is in the second.<\/p>\n
