THE new sprint queen of high school swimming Abbey Weitzeil twice shot down the national high school record to lead the 100-yard free in the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association All-American lists. Additionally, Chesterton&#8217;s Blake Pieroni topped the guys side of the equation.<\/p>\n<p>Weitzeil took down the 100-yard freestyle high school record twice during the CIF Southern Section Championships in May. First, she smashed the individual field with a 47.91 (22.95, 24.96) en route to breaking Dagny Knutson&#8217;s record of 48.15 from 2009. Weitzeil then leadoff Saugus High&#8217;s 400-yard free relay with a 47.82 (22.79, 25.03) to lower the record even further. So, not only did she become the first high schooler to break 48, she demonstrated the consistency to do it again. This was part of the same weekend when she set the 50-yard freestyle mark with a 21.98.<\/p>\n<p>Here is video of Weitzeil&#8217;s record-breaking swim:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jqx_NiE1dHo\" width=\"470\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Chesteron&#8217;s Blake Pieroni led his squad to a national public high school record in the 400-yard free relay with a 43.37 leadoff split to top the 100-yard free NISCA lists. The foursome put together a 2:59.36 to break the previous record of 2:59.76 set by New Trier in 2012. The team&#8217;s performance also demolished the state record that had been a 3:03.43 by Carmel in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Video of the record swim from prelims isn&#8217;t readily available, but Chesterton&#8217;s winning swim in finals is available.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rE9y-qpBCLQ\" width=\"470\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pieroni appeared on a special weekend Morning Swim Show with Jeff Commings today to talk about his swim. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/MorningSwimShow\/39875.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Check it out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not to dampen Pieroni\u2019s speedy swim, but Caeleb Dressel\u2019s 42.85 to win the 100 free at the junior nationals does not count for inclusion in the NISCA All-America list because it was not done during the high school season at a sanctioned high school meet.<\/p>\n<p>Weitzeil definitely is in her own space within the sprint freestyles at the high school level, while Pieroni had a career year at Chesterton as a senior.
