COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, July 10. IT took almost a month to make it official, but USA Swimming has released the names of swimmers that will represent the Stars and Stripes in August at three competitions around the world: Pan Pacific championships, junior Pan Pacific championships and junior open water world championships.<\/p>\n
The top competition will be the 10K swim at the Pan Pacific championships on August 25 in Australia in a two-kilometer course in a spit just off the Pacific Ocean. National champions Andrew Gemmell and Becca Mann will lead the squad as they attempt to keep the USA at the top of the podium after Christine Jennings and Chip Peterson won the inaugural Pan Pac race in 2010. Jennings will return to defend her title, while Eva Fabian will return after winning silver in 2010.<\/p>\n
Alex Meyer participated in the 10K at the 2010 Pan Pacs, but withdrew after feeling ill during the race. The late Fran Crippen memorably left the lead pack during the race to attend to Meyer, then finished second overall.<\/p>\n
The top four finishers in the 10K at last month’s nationals qualified for the trip Down Under:<\/p>\n

The junior Pan Pacific open water squad represents the future talent of open water swimming. Mann was the 10K champion at the 2012 junior Pan Pacs, illustrating the potential of the six Americans who will race in August in Hawaii. Isabella Rongione is showing promise after her first open water race, finishing seventh overall at nationals to earn a junior Pan Pacs bid. Lindsay Clary, the younger sister of Olympic champion Tyler Clary, is making strides in open water swimming as well.<\/p>\n

Headed to Israel for the junior open water world championship swim will be eight swimmers who qualified based on their performances in the 5K at nationals. Those aged 14 to 16 years old will swim a 5K race, while the 17- to 18-year-olds will complete a 7.5K circuit.<\/p>\n
