{"id":586583,"date":"2024-06-05T11:50:45","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T18:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=586583"},"modified":"2024-06-05T11:50:45","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T18:50:45","slug":"kate-douglass-heads-to-olympic-trials-as-cover-model-for-mathematics-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kate-douglass-heads-to-olympic-trials-as-cover-model-for-mathematics-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"Kate Douglass Heads to Olympic Trials as Cover Model \u2026 for Mathematics Journal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kate Douglass Heads to Olympic Trials as Cover Model \u2026 for Mathematics Journal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Olympic swimmer <strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> has graced the cover of many a magazine, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C7zhG4hxyBq\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in particular that comes to mind out this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the 15-time NCAA champion added a new honor this week: The cover of an academic journal.<\/p>\n<p>Douglass is on the cover of the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/journal\/283\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summer 2024 edition<\/a> of <em>The Mathematical Intelligencer,<\/em> a collection of 19 academic papers that includes research she and teammates at Virginia conducted into quantitative analysis of swimming performance.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embedded post\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embed\/feed\/update\/urn:li:share:7203777121666678784\" width=\"504\" height=\"356\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Douglass, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kate-douglass-learned-from-tokyo-experience-ready-for-trials-to-be-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who graduated in 2023<\/a> with a degree in computer science, is one of five authors on a paper titled, \u201cSwimming in Data,\u201d first published in March. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00283-024-10339-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A full version of the paper is available to view here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Douglass is the lead author, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/virginiasports.com\/player\/august-lamb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fellow UVA swimmers<\/a> <strong>August Lamb<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/virginiasports.com\/player\/will-tenpas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and<\/a> <strong>William Tenpas.<\/strong> They were assisted by <strong>Jerry Lu,<\/strong> now at MIT\u2019s Sloan School of Management, and faculty mentor and collaborator Dr. <strong>Ken Ono<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ono has worked with a plethora of top swimmers at UVA, including Olympians like <strong>Alex Walsh, Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> and <strong>Paige Madden,<\/strong> to improve their performance via quantitative analysis of minute details of their stroke and race plans. (In turn, many like Douglass have gained experience as researchers and had the chance to be published.) They\u2019ve used that insight to improve their times and craft international race plans, working hand in glove with coach <strong>Todd DeSorbo.<\/strong> Ono\u2019s interest in swimming performance began when he was at Emory, where his son <strong>Sage Ono<\/strong> was a top swimmer for the Division III school, and one of the early proponents of the analysis was Olympian <strong>Andrew Wilson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Their work includes the creation of \u201cdigital twins\u201d to analyze performance down to the millisecond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey allow us to make recommendations that immediately improve technique, offer suggestions for race strategy, and point to long-term aspirational goals\u2014all in pursuit of the optimal race,\u201d the authors write. \u201cIn terms of technique, we are able to digitally identify an athlete\u2019s comparative strengths and weaknesses without having to hold an actual live race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ono, Alex Walsh and others spoke at length to <em>Swimming World<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-math-behind-the-medals-professor-ken-ono-is-helping-virginia-revolutionize-swimming-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last year about what their work entails and provided insight into the methodology<\/a>.
