He was 14 seconds clear of <strong>Chip Wheelie Shoyat<\/strong> of Northern Kentucky Clippers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-grimes-wins-third-straight-10k-to-start-u-s-open-water-nationals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie Grimes Wins Third Straight 10K to Start U.S. Open Water Nationals<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/teammates-brinkleigh-hansen-cobe-hehenberger-win-open-water-nationals-junior-titles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teammates Brinkleigh Hansen, Cobe Hehenberger Win Open Water Nationals Junior Titles<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The win comes in the first national championships since Gravley\u2019s brother, <strong>Brennan Gravley,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/open-water-swimmer-brennan-gravley-announces-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced his retirement in January<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race was good,\u201d Dylan Gravley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/news\/2024\/05\/05\/2024-open-water-national-championships-close-with-5k-junior-7.5k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told USA Swimming<\/a>. \u201cSome guys were pushing the pace and taking charge, and I like to see that. I was behind a couple of times and had to really charge and make up some ground, which wasn&#8217;t part of the plan. I got it done, finished first, and filled the shoes that my brother left for me. I\u2019m happy about that and it was a wonderful day for open water racing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trey Dickey<\/strong> of Texas A&amp;M, who had finished just off the podium in fourth in the 10K, finished third in the shorter sprint.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 5K went to Japanese swimmer <strong>Ichika Kajimoto<\/strong>. She was the only finisher among the top seven in the 10K \u2013 she had been fourth \u2013 to also contest the sprint. She clocked in at 59:05. Great Britain\u2019s <strong>Ella Dyson<\/strong> was second in 59:19.<\/p>\n<p>Only 15 swimmers were entered in the race, 11 of them Americans. The top home-country finisher was <strong>Claire Stuhlmacher.<\/strong> The NOVA of Virginia swimmer went 59:43. She had been 10th in the 10K.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daisy Collins<\/strong> won a finishing sprint to take the girls\u2019 junior 7.5K in 1:35.31. The North Carolina Aquatics swimmers was nine seconds up on <strong>Samantha Anderson.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really good,\u201d Collins said. \u201cAround the third lap, I got dizzy but just told myself I\u2019ve done this before so I can do it again. I put my head down and went for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colin Jacobs<\/strong> was another local winner, going 1:28.23 to win the boys\u2019 junior 7.5K. Swimming for Sarasota Sharks, he bested Sarasota Tsunami swimmer <strong>Jackson Irwin<\/strong> by five seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super happy with that,\u201d Jacobs said. \u201cDefinitely not what I was expecting, but it&#8217;s amazing that I was able to get first. The last turn, I told myself that I might as well go for it here and see what happens.
