Competition for the 2024 NCAA Women\u2019s Championship opens May 9, with all matches to be held at Spieker Aquatics Center at the University of California, Berkeley. On Monday all nine spots for NCAAs were confirmed after months of fierce competition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six berths were decided by last weekend\u2019s conference tournaments, with the winners advancing. Three were finalized<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday night<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the NCAAs\u2019 at-large committee. In almost every year, this is a formality; the top MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) teams that didn\u2019t win their tournament getting at-large bids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Per usual, the Big Four are in<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That narrative did not change this season, though 2024 has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-womens-water-polo-preview-olympic-year-may-have-impact-on-season-ahead\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certainly been unusual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For the first time since 1997, Stanford lost to Cal by five goals (or more)\u2014twice. The Golden Bears beat the Cardinals 10-4 Saturday in the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MPSF Championships<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Indiana a week after an 11-6 Cal win at Palo Alto in the annual Big Splash. This put Stanford in a tough spot; two late season losses and a match with USC for third place in the MPSF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trojans were also a 10-4 loser, to undefeated UCLA in the other MPSF semifinal. It\u2019s been a difficult first full season for coach <\/span><b>Casey Moon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with more losses (8) this year than in the last two combined (7). A one-goal loss in the MPSF third-place game put USC in a (somewhat) precarious predicament; if the NCAA selection committee decided to go in a different direction, the Trojans would miss the national championship tournament for the first time in 20 seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (18-8; 4-2 MPSF), the selection folks did not deviate: Cal was given the No. 3 seed,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (18-6; 4-2 MPSF) is No. 4 and USC is in\u2014and will face The Cardinal in the NCAA quarterfinals on May 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the MPSF final,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UCLA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (23-0; MPSF 6-0) continued its season-long winning streak, downing Cal 13-10. It\u2019s the second time this season the Bruins have beaten their Pac12 rival and gave coach <strong>Adam<\/strong> <\/span><b>Wright\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> team an automatic NCAA berth for the first time since 2017. The win also guaranteed Wright\u2019s team the top seeding in this year\u2019s tournament. As in the previous match-up on April 13 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/freshman-goalie-lauren-steele-has-had-immediate-impact-for-top-ranked-ucla-womens-water-polo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UCLA freshman goalie <\/span><b>Lauren Steele<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outplayed Cal All-American netminder <\/span><b>Isabel Williams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/coach-adam-wright-guiding-weighs-in-on-guiding-uclas-powerful-water-polo-programs\/\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach Adam Wright Weighs in on Guiding UCLA\u2019s Powerful Water Polo Programs<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hawai\u2019i is NCAA\u2019s No. 2 seed<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big West tournament<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the only drama was: could anyone stop Hawai\u2019i? The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rainbow Wahine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (22-3; 7-0 Big West) beat UC-San Diego 17-10 in a semifinal match, ensuring one half of a long-running rivalry\u2014five previous seasons\u2014would get to the Big West Championship final. They caught a huge break when Long Beach State knocked off UC-Irvine, Hawai\u2019i\u2019s usual finals opponent, in Saturday\u2019s other semifinal. The Beach hadn\u2019t made a Big West final in seven seasons nor ever qualified for NCAAs. They\u2019re still waiting; a 9-5 win sent the Wahine into the postseason as the #2 seed\u2014 and favored to advance to their first-ever national championship final.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A loss after 20-straight win kills LMU postseason hopes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One team which is decidedly blue this week is Loyola Marymount. The Lions had reeled off 20 straight wins, and\u2014after UCLA\u2019s undefeated season\u2014at 27-3 have the best record in NCAA polo. But after advancing to the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden Coast Conference final<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they met GCC preseason favorite<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresno State<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (21-7; 6-1 GCC), The result was an epic battle in which the Bulldogs, after building an early seven goal lead, held on for a 12-11 OT win, giving FSU their fourth consecutive title as well as four-straight NCAA berths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sinking Sharks<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big upset in 2023 conference tournament play was LIU\u2019s stunning win in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) final. The Sharks<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liuathletics.com\/news\/2023\/4\/30\/maac-champs-womens-water-polo-tops-wagner-earns-programs-first-ncaa-bid.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13-12 OT decision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> snapped a string of Wagner conference match wins at six and marked the first time in eight years that the Seahawks had been beaten by a MAAC foe in the water. This season the shoe was on the other foot; LIU was the victim of the biggest postseason upset (so far).\u00a0 Mount St. Mary\u2019s won its first-ever postseason match, stunning the Sharks on <\/span><b>Beatrice Vieira\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind-the-back goal with six seconds to beat LIU goalie <\/span><b>Martina Giannoni<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 9-8 victory by The Mount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worst part of all this; if the Sharks HAD managed to face the Seahawks (in the semifinals) they had a good probability of staging another upset. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagner<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (29-4; 12-0 MAAC) DID win the MAAC (and yet another NCAA berth, the program\u2019s tenth) by squeaking past a Marist team that LIU had beaten by eight goals three weeks ago. Wagner draws Biola, the WWPA champs, on May 9th in the opening match of this year\u2019s tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You can\u2019t keep the Biola Eagles down<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewwpa.com\/women\/2024_WWPA_Women-s_Championship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Water Polo Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WWPA) may be the most interesting of the six women\u2019s water polo conferences because it\u2019s made up of teams from both East and West\u2014and sometimes an Eastern squad wins and makes it to NCAAs. Last time that happened was 2022, when Salem qualified from the WWPA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the Eagles of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biola<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (14-15; 5-1 WWPA) showed up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those of you who are unfamiliar with the name, \u201cBIOLA\u201d stands for \u201cBible Institute of Los Angeles.\u201d And, when I spoke with Eagles coach <\/span><b>Sarah Orozco<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in February, she verified that her players REALLY do believe in the bible (and Christ) part. Which is impressive, especially now they have qualified for NCAAs a second consecutive season, by virtue of a 12-11 come-from-behind win against Cal State East Bay (CSEB). And Biola\u2019s program has only been in existence for three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, you\u2019ve got to believe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Princeton comes up big\u2026 again!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll end this closer to me\u2013Cambridge, MA as a matter of fact. That\u2019s the home of Harvard College, which hosted this year\u2019s Collegiate Water Polo Association championship. Despite beating everyone in their conference during the regular season, the CWPA postseason was an eye-opening affair for Princeton. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tigers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (23-6; 10-0 CWPA) did prevail; it would have been surprising if they did not win a second-straight conference title. But it was by the skin of their collective teeth; they fell behind by three goals early in the third period before rallying to take a 10-9 win over second-seeded Michigan. The match was not decided until the final minute when sophomore <\/span><b>Ava Houlahan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beat Michigan goalie <\/span><b>Alex Brown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to give Princeton the win.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/princeton-rallies-for-2024-cwpa-womens-water-polo-title-on-houlahans-last-minute-goal\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Princeton Rallies for 2024 CWPA Women\u2019s Water Polo Title On Houlahan\u2019s Last-Minute Goal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s always exciting to go to NCAAs; that&#8217;s what all the training and matches and effort is for. To fall short, like LBS, or LMU or Michigan or CSEB did, is hard. What\u2019s harder is to succeed once you\u2019ve arrived at NCAAs. In a quarter-century of national championship play, only three teams\u2014Stanford, UCLA and USC\u2014have ever won. This year there\u2019s hope for change; Hawai\u2019i is the first No. 2 seed in the country that\u2019s not from the Pac 12.
