Not in the lists for goals or assists or points, stats you might assume tell a story of success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bruins (20-0; 5-0 MPSF), the nation\u2019s top-ranked team most of this season, are succeeding not because of flashy plays or by compiling impressive statistics, but because they do the little things right. Exactly as Coach <\/span><b>Adam Wright <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophomore <\/span><b>Anna Pearson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tops for UCLA with 34 goals, leads the MPSF with 71 exclusions earned. Freshman <\/span><b>Panni <\/b><b>Szegedi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Bruins\u2019 number two scorer, has a middle-of-the-stat-pack 15 sprint wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there is <\/span><b>Lauren Steele<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UCLA\u2019s precocious freshman goalie. Hailing from Greenwich, CT, an Eastern locale rising in esteem among West Coast water polo coaches, Steele is second in steals and save percentage while also fourth in saves. And, as was demonstrated in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uclabruins.com\/news\/2024\/4\/13\/womens-water-polo-no-1-ucla-gets-huge-road-win-at-no-5-california-7-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7-6 victory over MPSF foe Cal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last Saturday in Berkeley, Steele is more than able to hold her own against any opponent. She stopped 20 Golden Bear shots and was particularly sharp in the fourth quarter when the home team furiously buzzed the UCLA net, looking\u00a0 for an equalizer that never came.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had a game plan to force them to shoot more shots,\u201d Steele <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailybruin.com\/2024\/04\/14\/goalkeeper-lauren-steele-and-upperclassmen-lead-ucla-to-victory-over-california\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Daily Bruin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the match. \u201c\u2026my teammates definitely helped me with their blocks, because doing their blocking responsibilities helps me do my blocking responsibilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a Wright defensive scheme\u2014which is a UCLA defensive scheme and, ultimately, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Wooden\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Wooden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defensive scheme\u2014it\u2019s field blocks and earned exclusions that trump goals and assists. Oh, and wins; under their exacting coach the Bruins have captured 20 wins against no losses this season, the best measure of success for the UCLA women since Wright took over leadership of their program in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A UCLA lifer\u2014he won two NCAA titles as a player and has three more as coach of the men\u2019s program\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/coach-adam-wright-guiding-weighs-in-on-guiding-uclas-powerful-water-polo-programs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright preaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that success starts with defense. And, in facing a Cal team that had only allowed one team, Hawai\u2019i, to tag them with double-digit goals this season, Wright knew that defending their goal was a priority for his team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steele suits this priority perfectly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt Lauren puts us in a position to be successful. That has a direct correlation to who she is every day,\u201d Wright said in an email this week. \u201cHer focus and attention to details is remarkable and has put her in a position to be successful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In describing his freshman goalie\u2019s role on a young Bruin squad\u2014UCLA has twice as many freshman and sophomores as juniors and seniors\u2014Wright explained that \u201cLauren\u2019s impact on our team does not come as a surprise because of what we see from her on a daily basis her intensity and focus towards training.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>From Greenwich to Los Angeles to Westwood<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting with club play in Connecticut, Steele pushed to be successful, and might have stayed on the East Coast if Covid 19 hadn\u2019t intervened. A stint at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/6-8sports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/68Academy-booklet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6\/8 Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles led her to three memorable seasons playing for Orange Lutheran High School, and now Westwood and UCLA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maggie Steffens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, captain of the US Women\u2019s National team and a three-time Olympic gold medalist, remembers when a young Steele came to 6\/8, the program she runs with five-time Olympian <\/span><b>Tony Azevedo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe came to 6\/8 Academy during Covid,\u201d Steffens said this week in New York City. \u201cWe saw the bright talent in her, not just athletically but mentally. She was ready and willing to give it her all\u2014she moved across the country to achieve her dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m so proud of all the hard work she\u2019s done and the woman she\u2019s becoming. I look forward to following her career,\u201d Steffens added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As their season comes to a climax, what lies ahead for Steele and her teammates\u2014the MPSF Tournament and then NCAAs\u2014will further test their commitment to success. As Wright knows only too well, it\u2019s not how you start but how you finish: last season the UCLA men were undefeated through 24 matches then lost three of their last five, including the national championship match to Cal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And after that, perhaps recognition of success. In a watch list citing the nation\u2019s top collegiate players, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/water-polo-womens-watch-list-for-25th-peter-j-cutino-award-heisman-equivalent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pearson and Szegedi were listed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not Steele, an oversight Wright took exception to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know she\u2019s not\u2026 and find that interesting,\u201d said her coach. \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt [Lauren] should be a part of the Cutino Award watch list.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if her team keeps winning, Steele may capture the award as the top collegiate female in America.
